Reality - can I really give a fig about it anyway?

Sitting in front of my cathode-ray tube I pondered on that question. The astronomy prog. told me that 96% of what the Universe was - was actually missing, gone, lost, unknown, or unknowable, it was in fact DARK.
96% of what ‘the thing’ called The Universe should have was called dark matter and dark energy, only 4% of what should be there was actually - well, there. The 4% of the Universe which actually can be found makes up all of the atoms contained in the universe.
Disturbingly, these very same atoms (all the found 4% of universe), are themselves each one composed of 90-something % empty space.
So, I ask myself, just what constitutes reality for us anyways - a not-totally, fully, understood 2-ish % of 100 percent of atomic volume out of 4% of an almost unknown ‘96% dark matter and energy containing’ universe…
 
Is there a question on the table or are you just doing some existential rambling…
 
I guess most colleges offer the astronomy and cosmology courses around this time since so many of us are learning about the same thing. I don’t rememer hearing all these arguments last semester and I know at my school it is only offered in the Fall. Oh, dark matter can still interact and feels the force of gravity. It holds are universe together and although it is not understood, I assum is very important.
 
If this is so, it only reinforces what the great saints have always said–that compared to God, we and the whole universe are nothing. 😉

If I may offer you something, there is more to reality than just what it is made of. Certainly a chair, for example, is composed of atoms that are mostly empty space and interact with each other in certain ways, but there is also a “chair-ishness” that makes it a chair and not a table. This also is reality.

That is most interesting and it offers up another great vista for thought…did the chair-ishness always exist even before chairs.
 
Good question … I do know that it forms the underlying assumptions of transubstantiation–that the atoms of the bread are still there, but the “breadishness” has been changed to “Body-ishness”.

The forces that cause the existing matter to react.

Two biggies are Gravity and Electromagnetic forces. Then also strong and week nuclear forces. Electromagnetism accounts for all the space in and between atoms, and gravity accounts for all the large bodies. When we touch something, I don’t think our atoms ever really touch each other, but the forces push on each other, and we can feel them interact as it is translated by our nervous system.
