Annulment is a judgment, in which a marriage is declared non-existent. Conditions for such a declaration include: lack of true consent or lack of intends to abide by the marriage vows, at the time of the wedding. Unfortunately many people obtain annulment of valid marriages by proving that these deficiencies existed at the time of wedding, using different legal maneuvers. They do this so that they can participate in the sacraments of the church. However, true participation in the sacraments is participation in the life of God, who is love. This means that one must reconciles with his/her spouse and re-accepts love in their relationship. Merely obtaining legal declaration of nullity does not change what is real. We have to therefore, be honest in our heart and examine the situation in the spirit of love. Furthermore, in order to prevent misuse of the annulment process, there should be proper enquiry about the validity of a marriage before a couple is married. Making such enquiry 15 or 20 years later reduces the chance of getting correct information.

“…This means that one must reconciles with his/her spouse and re-accepts love in their relationship…”

What if she refuses all attempts at reconciliation?

Sometimes, the stresses of marriage may seem unbearable, especially if our spouse is alcoholic, abusive, mentally ill or unfaithful. In such situations, we can stay faithful to our commitment; by remembering, how Jesus compensated for our wrong doing, when we were unfaithful to him and wronged him. We should continually pray and make sacrifices for the conversion of our spouse. In our prayers, we should surrender ourselves completely to God’s will, and ask Him to be our thoughts, feelings, desires and actions.****
