Just wanted to know what everyone’s opinion is on Reality TV is. Do you think that Reality TV is damaging to society or has no effect on society.

PS: Tried to post a poll, but it wouldn’t work, sorry! 😦

Good questions! I don’t think they are any more or any less damaging than what is already out there, but that isn’t saying much! Some are definitely worse than others. I sorta like some of the competitive ones but they all seem to be sexed up to one degree or another. If I had to choose good or bad I would say bad!

To me, reality tv is dumbing down of our society. The creaters of these programs have simply run out of ideas and now one ever writes a good story anymore for tv.
The last program that I thought was well written was Quantum Leap, Babylon 5 and Star Trek: the Next Generation. (note early 90’s programs).
I actually have NEVER watched a reality show but after hearing everyone else talking about them, I am convinced that they are NOT worth watching.

Reality shows: 'You’re fired! and booted off the island!

I can’t stand “Reality” tv! It is so petty and shallow. I watched “Survivor” a few times and find it idiotic. Yuck!! I think it is dumbing down also, as dumb as it gets!!

Ahhh see I LOVE the Apprentice. It’s a show that makes people be smart. I also LOOOOOOVE the Amazing Race. Big Brother makes my skin crawl, and I can take or leave Survivor and the Bachelor(ette).

I don’t really care for them. There is to much hype. Then we hear about new shows who wants to be a porn star? When will they draw the line?

Maybe after who wants to commit suicide? (we will pay for the cofin, funeral etc.)

I think the one which might be the begining of the end for all this so called reality t.v. is Fox’s up coming program “Wife Swap”. Yup, that’s what I said wife swap, from the commericals I have seen the families will trade the wives from one household to another. The “new” mom will set her rules for the kids, etc, etc, etc. What they aren’t showing is just how far this so called swap is supposed to go. It has to make you wonder, doesn’t it? As far as I’m concerned there’s nothing real about “Reality TV”, I’m hard pressed to find anything real in 99% of it. I believe it all started with the former show called “911” and then “Cops” and has been heading further downhill since then.

I actually like reality tv shows… but I guess that puts me in the minority here, lol

I love Survivor and look forward to each new season…I never miss an episode of Big Brother… I watch the Apprentice, the bachelor/bachelorette, and a few others whose names escape me at this late hour…

To respond to the person who brought up “wife swap”… I have not yet seen that one, but do watch “trading spouses: meet your new mommy”. It is not sexual in any way. The main point seems to be showing people of certain backgrounds (rich/poor, country/city, workaholic/laid back…etc) what it is like to experience the other side. It seems , so far at least, to make the families appreciate what they have instead of taking it for granted. It also helps the children realize that there are different types of people and ways of doing things and they need to be respected…

I guess what all of these shows have in common for me is that I get to see many different types of personalities interact and see what works and what doesn’t. Maybe I find that more intersting than the average person because I am chronically ill and mostly a shut in… I don’t get to experience the human relationships that most people take for granted…work, school, social settings…etc.

So, sad as it may sound, it is almost a social thing for me… kind of a new take on sitting on the park bench or at the restaurant bar and “people watching”…

but I do draw the line… “who wants to be a porn star???”. you won’t catch me watching that one!

I like the competitive/game reality shows over the romantic ones.

I watched the bachelor show a couple of times because everybody was talking about it and I was curious. It was complete hype, aiming at the lowest denominator, unreal, and sick. I don’t understand how all these women could fawn over a guy that they barely knew, and then cry about how much they loved him when he booted one of them off the show. This was acting, and bad acting at that.

The fact that these women also make-out on national television is even stranger to me. I shouldn’t just fault the women because the man–bachelor Bob–tried to act so caring and heart-broken each time he had to eject a woman. Hah! Later on he gets engaged to marry somebody completely different who wasn’t even on the show. Surpise, surprise–not!

I am sorry that these shows are among the cleanest. Most shows aren’t fit for children to watch and these are just too stupid.

Maybe I should thank the networks because of them we have no TV on after supper. It is shlock or inappropriate for kids.

Actually the ‘first attempt’ of the reality shows was on MTV with ‘The Real World’ back in the 1980’s. All you do is put some people together and set up cameras all over the house. It is just that the networks picked up on this and went the next level: i.e. put people in specific situations or goals.
The post eariler talked about ‘Wife Swap’. I don’t even want to think what could go even lower!
Reality TV is the lowest common demoninator for the lowest common demoninator.

Now Candid Camera in the early 1960’s was creative and just good for laughs. I guess comedy like that does not hold any value in this society today.

That show has been playing here in the UK for a while. It’s GREAT! you get to see moms switch places and interact with their “kids” and new home. There’s never been anything naughty going on as far as husband/wife relationships… that’s not what it’s about. I think it should be called Mom Swap instead. It’s interesting b/c you learn about the different ways houses and families are run and as a non-Mom it gives me ideas for the future of how I want to structure things.

I have friends and colleagues who are writers for various “reality TV” (now there’s an oxymoron for you) shows, and believe me they are tightly scripted and directed, there is no resemblance to reality, any more than there is on any other TV production.

I don’t like much reality TV, but I think that some shows are ok (i.e American Idol). But I dislike anything on MTV, especially a particular show with someone named Stevo in it. That show is rubbish. :nope:

I have one huge problem (o.k.,I have more than one, but this is the bigest) with the ideal of the “Wife Swap” program, I am going to presume that even the children must agree to doing this program, for the protection of the network legally speaking. Here’s where I am worried, as a mother and grandmother I worry that these young children have been pressured into it by their parents, I am sure their is a good chunk of money in it for them. Please don’t start telling me how “mature” children are today, I have 6 grandkids from the ages of 3 to almost 13. My almost 13 grand-daughter is mature for her age one minute, and 10 minutes later she is about as mature as her 6yr old sister.

There is no way these kids can truely give knowledgable consent to what they are going into with this type of program. I honestly don’t believe the parents realize the full extent of what they are getting into. Just look at the fallout the families of the “Showbiz” program ( A&E and Bravo networks) are dealing with. The “kiddie pagent” family is or was being cyber-stocked, even to the point of death threats.

Reality TV is not a subject to get me on, but I hate it, all of it! I never even seen one show and don’t want too. I think you get the idea…😉

Reality TV runs from the smarmy to the silly, but remember that silly is not sinful. I saw part of “Trading Spouses” mommy/swap show and it was surprisingly interesting. The two moms spend a week as very unwelcome houseguests in each other’s homes and see some things each family may be in deep denial about. My personal reality TV is the NFL on a big screen, but I don’t think the genre as a whole is a sign of the apocalypse.

the only one i enjoy is queer eyes for the straight guy. this guys? are really funny i also like there ideas for decoration an cooking. 🙂
