The other term for scrupulosity is religious OCD. True scrupulosity should be treated by a mental health professional as well as a priest.

It can be a good thing in that it can help you grow in faith and morals. Not that it is in itself good.
Goodness no it doesnt. It in fact stunts such development which is why scrupulosity is never to be accepted or embraced in any form.

Perhaps he means that so far as it can be a part of the dark night of the soul, some good can come from bearing the cross?

I’m reaching I think…
No, scrupulosity is not part of the dark night of the soul. The dark night of the soul is a gift from God, and is endured with faith and serenity. Scrupulosity is a torment that is of absolutely no value and is not even a cross to bear. It is not a gift from God and is to be absolutely, utterly rejected and overcome, not borne. It does not contribute to spiritual growth and does not enable sufferers to learn more about faith and morals. It is debilitating and results in an unreliable conscience.

This is why it’s never a good idea for the scrupulous to post their questions here instead of trusting and obeying their confessor. And still they keep coming…and coming…and coming…

No wonder they never get better.
