really weird

okay this was really weird I went to a new church this easter I went to the vigil mass on saturday I did not know it till the last minute. well there was literally an intermission where the priest stopped the mass and invitied the congregation to get some water and strech there legs. he sat at the back of the church for 5 minutes and had a good time talking to someone who was there. then came back in and started the service like it was a prefectly natural thing to do. I thought we were in a theater seeing the show.

Our former pastor used to do this. We do a full immersian baptism, and I think a part of it was to give the newly baptised a chance to change clothes and get back inside, as the next part of the liturgy required their presence.
 
Did they sell refreshments and t-shirts and souvenier candles during the break?
 
Why are you surprised? The priest thought that this way would be more fun. The mass is about fellowship and community. It is about coming together as a community for 1 hour a week and pretending we all like each other. Oh wait it’s not. If in fact there was something that genuinely called for sometime between the liturgy of the Word and the liturgy of the Eucharist, he could have easily ran the homily a little long or just did some prayers. I would suggest praying for your priest. Also pray for all of us on this forum. A good deal of us are quick to jump on hints of liturgical abuses. Again pray for all priests, your priest especially, and pray for all of us. Remember it is difficult for the priests they are harassed by the dark prince much more and though they may fail they are still priests.

yes it was rude and wrong but right on the money when I walked back to my seat I passed my mother in law and told her they were out of popcorn.

The last couple of years we have done the renewal of baptismal promises and sprinkling of the congregation during that time. The celebrant is also changing clothes during that time; so the renewal and sprinkling is done by a concelebrant or the deacons. It keeps things moving nicely and does not appear to violate any directions.
 
I am glad to say that mine didn’t do that. All parts flowed together beautifully and that is what made it so special for me.

Why would we have to “stretch our legs?”:rolleyes:
 
Maybe he has an older demographic in his parish?

During the Chrism Mass we had several interruptions. A concelebrating priest had to be wheeled out in a wheelchair, and several people fainted or were sick.

I’m not necessarily supporting this action, but I can see where it would be helpful. Those very long Masses can leave people exhausted or anxious to the point of not participating anymore.

How long was the Vigil?

I’ve heard of some very orthodox parishes that take a ‘liturgical break’ at some point during the Vigil, especially if the Vigil will run three or four hours or more. Four hours could be too long a time for the priest himself to go without a drink (for the throat) or perhaps a restroom break.

This particular priest seems like he was being more casual than he might have been. But the underlying idea is not so problematic.
 
how long was the whole mass? Tell the priest I will take him to all the Holy Sat. Services at a Church near my house, he could expect over 10 hours worth of services between Sat. morning and getting done at around 2-3 am Sunday morning. About the only “break” is a couple of hour break between the time when new members are received and then after 4pmish when the services pick back up.
Point is, after a while you get used to things and “short” means anything under 1.5 hours in the Eastern Orthodox/Eastern Catholic Churches. I have no problems with the services being shorter in another tradition, don’t get me wrong here.
I have problems with the priest taking an intermission like that in a mass and reception of new members that may only last 2 hours tops, most likely far less than two hours. It distracts from the seriousness of the Holy Saturday.

Actually, I think it does. I’m not positive, but I asked this question of the priests when planning easter vigil a few years ago…because the newly baptized and pastor had to change, why couldn’t the associate pastor tag team the next item (renewal and sprinkling)? They said no, its supposed to be the main celebrant.

I’m not advocating what the OP said either. Just discussing your point about changing to the concelebrant.

The Mass is not supposed to be interrupted like that.
 
When my BIL was ordained to the priesthood back in '91 (at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, by PJPII himself), the Mass was FOUR hours long, no breaks, packed to the rafters, standing room only. Security was so tight, even going to the bathroom was out of the question (and we had two little ones with us!)

I think a two-hour long Mass without breaks would be survivable.
