I’ll try to keep this brief. I married my wife 31 years ago. She is a cousin to my brother’s wife. I never regretted one moment, because I love her as much today as I did the day we married.
We were married by a Justice of the Peace in the Texas town we were both born in, and moved the next day to her place of residence in Ohio, where she had moved to be close to her parents and other family. They are a hispanic family, and her grandparents had followed migrant work to the Midwest, and settled there.

Agreed from the beginning, and true to my promise, I very quickly coverted to Catholicism, after she finalized her annulment to her only previous marriage, which had lasted just a few months when she was very young. I realize that this was not the proper way to enter this marriage, and we both confessed and did penance, and had the rings blessed in a ceremony performed by our parish priest.

After many years of the normal ups and downs, and the regretable use of contraception, even to the point of her having contaceptive surgery after our second child (she had a daughter that I adopted, and I’ve always considered her my own) from our marriage.
About 7 years ago, I came back to Texas to be with my ailing mother and help to keep her in her home as long as possible. She passed 4 years ago, and my son has come to live with me in the home she left us. My wife has a very good job in Ohio, with thirty some years at a major soup company. I was a bricklayer and had worked in 4 states, spent 5 years in the Union, and was self employed 3 different times, not to mention countless stints for other contractors, including my brother.

4 years ago, due to lack of work in masonry, I went to work at WalMart, and after 2 1/2 years there, I came to be a service employee (janitor) at a major candy factory.

Now to the question.
I’m kinda stuck here for now, my son and I. He has a learning disability and is on SSI, so I’m struggling to keep the home here, etc.I had a powerful reconversion 4 years ago, and have been faithfully practicing my faith in all areas, including chastity and fidelity, which I discovered, was not as challenging as I expected with God’s help. I have never been unfaithful. In fact, my wife is the only one I ever slept with.
Am I doing this right? Given the circumstances? At confession, when I told the priest my situation, and that I was chaste, and I repented for my use of contraception, he didn’t really deal with that one way or the other, but I feel like this period of my life is part of my penance for allowing that to happen.
Should I be doing all I can to get back to Ohio? or just keep following the Lord’s lead like I feel like I have been?

Sorry for writing a book here.:o

Take strength in what you are doing.
If this looks to be a peminate situation of employment, then for the sake your wife, IMHO, you should be working towards having her move in to a new home with as soon as reasonably possible.

In the mean time, please try to find a church that has the That Man Is You program.

Take Heart Brother, you’re not alone!

Each one of us is called to chastity, whether we are married or unmarried. If I am understanding properly, perhaps the title of the thread should be “Reasons for continence in marriage?”

oldburkes,

If I am reading your post correctly, it seems you feel that your current situation may be a punishment from God for past sins.

As the gospel story yesterday (of the blind man, presumed to be blind due to sin) shows us, we shouldn’t jump to such conclusions. Difficulties in life come to people of faith and people who sin. We should accept good times with thanks, and offer suffering to God whn we experience it. But it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do all you can to better your circumstances. If I was in your situation, I would be trying to find the best way to get your family living in one place as soon as possible. I know jobs and income are important, and you need some income to merely survive, but make sure family is the priority always.

If you confessed your role in artificial contraception, and were absolved, it is forgiven.

You talk about you and your son. What does your wife think about this living separately? Is she happy with it? There can be reasons why couples must live apart but a Christian marriage is for life.

Yes, you were forgiven. I know all about self imposed penance, if the Lord has forgiven us, who are we to not forgive ourselves? Easier said than done sometimes.

Is there room enough for you and your son in Ohio? Dump the burden of your house in Texas and rejoin your wife, become a family again.

It sounds like you are a Catholic that takes his faith seriously and you are doing your best. God does not punish us, it just is not His nature.

If I read between the lines, it seems like your real question is ‘Is it OK to live far away from my wife’. To be honest, as much as sometimes circumstances dictated a temporary separation, I do not think it is ideal. If your wife has a good job in Ohio, I don’t understand why you can’t sell the house and move back to her. Sure money will be tight until you find another job but… I would think keeping 2 residences would be much more expensive in the long run

Thank you all very much for your thoughts and helpful advise.
Swizzlestick, you’re right. Maybe I should have said continence, or abstinence.
I think you all agree that I’m needlessly seeing this as a punishment for sins that I have been resolved of. And that is the heart of the matter and the underlying question that, I guess, I was trying to ask.

I feel so incredibly blessed, since my reconversion, to have the jobs I’ve been given, having been devastated from the lack of work in construction, that I felt it was all providential to show me humility, which I learned very well.

I’m confident that my wife is faithful, and I absolutely agree that a marriage is forever. All the more reason for me to get the family together again. I guess I just needed to hear that from a Catholic perspective.

I keep falling behind on the property taxes, and I think it’s time to quit trying to save the home and simply let go. 🙂 I have always been aware of the challenges in changing jobs, selling the home, moving, etc., but I trust the Lord to show me how.

Thank you all for your help.

Maybe this thread can continue as being about abstinence, and are there legitimate resons for it? At our age, my wife 57, and me 58, it’s not exactly the burden that it would be on younger couples.🙂

Now that you have clarified with the above, I think you have received great advice with the answer quoted below. 🙂
