I saw a thread entitled Reasons to like the OF, and thought that one needed to be started for the EF. After all fair is fair, and I am very interested in what has to be said in this thread.

It is not my intention to pit the two Masses against each other, as their essence is the same. I just wanted to see what there is to appreciate in both forms of Mass.

I will be subscribed to both threads, and get the best of both worlds, so to speak.

So here goes.
  1. Becuase EF Masses tend to be more reverent than the OF.
  2. I love Latin.

Interesting idea for a thread. I only hope that people can retain your original spirit and keep it friendly while not pitting the two against one another.

As I said in the other thread, I have strong appreciation for both of them. I enjoy the fact the Church provides us with multiple ways to celebrate the same Rite. Having said that, I enjoy the quiet of the EF. I enjoy the fact that I have time to pray, think, and meditate during the Mass.

Latin
tradition
kneeling at the altar rail and receiving from the priest or deacon only
incense
gregorian chant
get to use great grandma’s missal
mantillas
reverence
modesty is the norm
say the black do the red
confession before mass is more common and convenient
ad orientum

I’ve learned to enjoy low mass for the same reason. Although I also love the missa cantata

The quiet times before/during Mass, Latin, respect, and reverence being shown are the biggest reasons I like the EF.

I also like the fact that people dress a lot more modestly (and often nicer at times but not necessarily in the latest fashions) which in turn also reflects in better behavior overall especially in the young people & children who attend alongside their parents.

Ahhh yes how could I have forgotten to mention that it is quiet before and after Mass? I guess I was not thinking.

I have only been to 4 Latin Masses since they are not offered often around here. The things I like most is that everyone is quiet, no hand holding, and no people making gestures that mimic the Priest. At the Missa Cantata and High Mass I have been to, the music is better and the Priest use more Incense and chanting. If the Novus Ordo was celebrated in the same way the TLM is, but using the vernacular, I would have less issues with it.

Reasons to Like the EF 🙂

Very little freedom for personalization!

Reminds me of Leviticus when God gave Moses specific requirements for worship and sacrifices. This showed that God is a personal being since it shows that there are certain things He likes having us do to give Him the proper worship owed to Him. Even the littlest details were of huge importance from the altar to the vestments.

I think we Catholics have lost sight of the fact that it’s not about how we want to worship God but about how God wants us to worship Him. Our only desire should be to do what He wants and if we kept this truth alive in the Church we would all be in a better place right now

I can’t believe I forgot kneeling to receive Communion. However, at our parish we have railings so you can choose to kneel and receive on the tongue during any Mass. I guess I forgot that at some parishes this isn’t the case! :o

All of the above, plus the grandeur and beauty of a Pontifical Solemn High Mass. 👍

For me, it is just the richness of detail in general. Like a Gothic style Church, one can keep discovering new things to think about and enjoy. Each little gesture has its place and a deeper meaning.

God Bless,
Joan

Everyone has mentioned most of what I was thinking as well. I would add, it gives a sense of the ancientness of the Church. It reminds me of it’s deep rooted connection to the past.

Nothing that has been mentioned here has anything to do with the E.F. by itself. Incense is used in the O.F. and Latin may be used exclusively in the O.F. of Mass. Altar rails, quiet moments (before, during, and after the Liturgy), incense, reverence, beauty, grandeur, and majesty are all components of the O.F.! Why do you all conflate your own experiences with the very basis of the Mass? Just because the O.F. is often celebrated irreverently, without chant, and in a haphazard manner does not mean that the opposites of those things are impossible. At heart, the Ordinary Form can be celebrated in exactly the same way as the Extraordinary Form, and there is literally no need to make a distinction except for the wording of the prayers themselves.

Presentation is an absolutely pointless criterion, because the O.F. may be celebrated with all the things that everyone here has associated with the E.F.! The reason I personally prefer the E.F. is its content. The Confiteor is longer, for one, and several things just seem more theologically clear and transparent than in the Ordinary Form. Why does everyone pine for the things that can be done this very minute?

I’m not pining for anything, I get all that listed at my EF mass.

Well there you go. We’re not talking about possibilities. We are talking of how things are now.

There is a parish in Manhattan that offers a beautiful OF mass. However, that is not necessarily standard everywhere:

What I like about the EF:

– Consistency (I can go to any EF missa Cantata and find a mass that is close to identical. For hundreds of years, the Christians that came before celebrated the same mass!

– The beauty of the Latin

– Ethereal Gregorian chant and polyphonic music

– The somberness and prayerfulness of the people

I understand the context, TrueLight, but the thread’s title and O.P. are about the Form itself. There is no mention of practice, but ontological existence. As it is, there is little difference in how both forms may be celebrated. :o

-Strict rubrics

-Mass with centuries of use (Mass of many ancestors, Popes, and Saints)

-Gregorian Chant 😃

-Ornate vestments

-Latin

-Quiet and reverent

-Only communion kneeling and on the tongue

-Ad Orientem

-People tend to watch their Sunday attire and veil

-More prayer and less socializing while in Church

As has been stated before, I love all of the grandeur, beauty, and Latin, but I would choose an EF Low Mass over an OF Pontifical High Mass done in Latin ad orientem, because of the prayers that are used. The Iudica Me, the old Confiteor, the triple Kyrie, the old Offertory, the Prayer to the Trinity before the Orate Fratres, the triple Domine non sum dignus, the Corpus Domini Nostri said by the priest as he gives Communion to each person, the Last Gospel, the Leonine Prayers, the priest’s numerous prayers for the mercy of God, the prayers during the Canon that say that the Sacrifice of Calvary is present, and the priest’s prayers begging God not to strike him down in his unworthiness to offer the Sacrament; these prayers give a sense of the holiness and wonder of God that isn’t as present, or isn’t as well shown, in the OF Mass.

I agree with all the mentioned above: reverence, prayers, chant, etc.
But the most important thing for me is that the EF has been celebrated for centuries and so it directly connects me with the way Catholics worshipped for a long time. I love this feeling of continuity.

Another thing that I love about the EFis that there is nothing ordinary about it. No vernacular language, no lay people shuffling around and being busy, no lame music that was hip 30 years ago. It is so obvious in EF that we are dealing with something very different, that is not meant to resemble my everyday life in any way. It is worship without apology. And I love it.
