Rebaptism as Protestant Adult

I was baptized in the Catholic Church as an infant in 1963 but was not raised in the faith nor practiced the faith. I had a born again Christian experience in 1983 at age 20 and was baptized in a Assembly of God church shortly after. My question is: Was it a sin of me to be rebaptized as an adult? I was taught and believed my infant baptism was unbiblical. Also. I backslid from my Christian faith for decades and now am in RCIA at age 55 looking to be confirmed in the Church.

This is really something to discuss with your priest, perhaps in confession. In a practical sense, the re-baptism did nothing but get you wet but your intentions at the time were important.
 
Not a sin, you were not comprehending the true situation, but your one true Baptism is as an infant as a Catholic.

Read about the three conditions for mortal sin. Grave matter, full knowledge, deliberate consent. “Rebaptism” in denial of Catholic baptism is certainly grave matter, but you likely did not have full knowledge of that.
 
I was taught and believed all usual falsehoods about Catholic doctrine and practice including infant baptism being “invalid”. I wish I never heard any anti-Catholic nonsense, but I heard all of it and believed it. :cry:
 
It seems unlikely you had the full knowledge to have it be a mortal sin. But bring it to confession in any case!
 
I will bring it to my first ever confession which is another issue.
Do I have to wait for my first confession with my fellow RCIA students or can I partake of the sacrament of reconciliation immediately? I have many issues of burden and need the sacrament as soon as possible.
 
You should ask this question of your pastor. He can give you the best guidance.
I was baptized as a Lutheran as a baby. I was also baptized in the Church of the Nazarene while in college. When I told my priest about it, he just said the Catholic Church only cares about the first valid baptism, which my Lutheran baptism was. There was no need to confess it. I did my first confession while in RCIA shortly before the Easter Vigil.
 
I am not sure if being baptized a second time is a sin or not, maybe a Priest or Deacon will reply to this thread, but I believe it is not something you should do because to me it is like saying you didn’t trust in the Holy Spirit the first time. That being said, you did not know any better. You did not do it a second time out of malice but out of not knowing any better. So don’t worry. Welcome home!
 
An old priest of mine would say, “the first baptism took” meaning, it was effective. Still, if it were me personally, I would do RCIA to reach Confirmation. That holy sacrament is the second half and permanent seal on the spirit of Baptism.

The only baptisms not accepted by the Catholic church are unitarian, mormon becasue they baptise the dead, and any baptism which is not done in the name of the father, son, and Holy Spirit.
 
Here’s a thought - many Christians, including Catholics, are re-baptized in the Jordan River when they travel to Israel. Anyone done this?
 
I and the rest of my travel group renewed our baptismal vows when we arrived at the river Jordan. Rebaptism is a big “No” in the Catholic Church if people are already baptised with a valid baptism done “In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit”.
