The catholic website doesn’t have information about revelation or if the catholic church believes in revelation and how it establishes its traditions. Can you explain this to me?

Are you talking about private vs. public revelation or are you talking about the book of Revelation?

The concept of revelation, not the book. Well the book of revelation was created because of revelation and that is my question. Do catholics believe in revelation.

Yes. Catholics belive revelation as a “moral neccessity” :
Revelation may be defined as the communication of some truth by God to a rational creature through means which are beyond the ordinary course of nature…
But canon is closed, and revelation will not contradict Sacred Scripture or Tradition…
…It remains here to distinguish the Christian Revelation or “deposit of faith” from what are termed private revelations. This distinction is of importance: for while the Church recognizes that God has spoken to His servants in every age, and still continues thus to favour chosen souls, she is careful to distinguish these revelations from the Revelation which has been committed to her charge, and which she proposes to all her members for their acceptance. That Revelation was given in its entirety to Our Lord and His Apostles. After the death of the last of the twelve it could receive no increment. It was, as the Church calls it, a deposit – “the faith once delivered to the saints” (Jude, 2) – for which the Church was to “contend” but to which she could add nothing.

We believe that public revelation ended with the death of the last apostle. That means that we believe all that is necessary for salvation was revealed during apostolic times.

We believe that private revelation can happen to individuals, and that these can result in devotions which can lead to more opportunities to receive grace. Catholics are not required to believe in any private revelation. Still, many do: things like Marian apparitions are private revelation and of those, the ones which have been approved by the Church as “ok” often have large followings among Catholics. Devotions like the Divine Mercy Chaplet, the Fatima Prayer and the Miraculous Medal are the result of private revelations.

ic now, thats why you have all those traditions. No revelation whatsoever involved.

Um, no. Many of our traditions are the result of private revelation. And some of them go back to apostolic times and are the result of public revelation. The Catholic church is all about revelation; it is simply cautious of accepting anything and everything that is claimed to be revelation. Doing so would open it up to false prophets.

If revelation is a “moral neccessity,” how do you then conclude that, “No revelation whatsoever [is] involved”? 🤷

Ok, so can someone explain to me the concept of revelation according to the Catholic church. Maybe you use a different word for it i don’t know about. But you must have some sort of communication with god to establish all of your traditions.

which catholic website?
go to the homepage of this one and search on “private revelation” and this is the first article among many to come up
catholic.com/thisrock/2000/0011bt.asp

you can also search the Catechism of the Catholic Church online at the bishops website usccb.org or many other sites on the topic of revelation, the first 200 or so sections of the Catechism answer you question.

also these forums are most helpful when you choose your forum wisely. this one is to discuss non-Catholic religions, if you have a question about Catholic teaching, best to begin with the Apologetics forum, or if it specifically about sacred scripture, with that sub-forum. Searching there will find the past discussions on your topic, with many helpful links and resources.

Ok, i still haven’t read a whole lot but what i did read makes absolutely no sense at all and i can’t figure this out for the life of me. So the catholic church accepts private revelation (which is understandable since most of your famous saints have received visions in some way) but they say that public revelation ended with the compilation of the bible or it was when the bible was written. Is that right?

Did you read the link?

Public revelation ended with the death of the last apostle. The books of the Bible were written during apostolic times and they are a repository of that public revelation.

yes, i read that part, That particular statement is pretty contradictory. The author was saying that the leaders receive some sort of revelation but its not additional revelation other then what is found in the bible and then goes on to say that the revelation they did receive basically has no value because its not supposed to be added to what was in the bible itself with the origional revelations.

But in the end the catholic church uses a million traditions and patterns that was developed through some sort of revelation in its 2000 year history. Thats what i’m clueless about.

No, its not. The “Revaltion” was given by Christ himself, and to an extent, his apostles. It was, is, and continued to be contained in Scripture. The Traditions are supported by Scripture, and vice versa. Scripture and Tradition are the cornerstones of doctrine

What you won’t see is doctrines or scriptures changed to suit the times.

Ic, so your saying the traditions are not based on any revelation at all, just on scripture.

so what did you read?
yes Divine Revelation we need for salvation ended with the death of the last apostle, and is protected, taught and handed down by the Catholic Church through Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition, and belief is binding on all Catholics.

Private revelation consists if messages, visions, locutions received from a heavenly source, God, Mary or another saint, granted to an individual and intended for the spiritual edification of that individual and for the people of that place and time if the apparition source directs the person to communicate the message to the Church. It is not binding on all Catholics, and only the authority of the Church can discern if the apparition or message is genuine.

Oh, i understand now. So you do believe in revelation with the apostles and Christ. And then you can use their teachings to add to traditions according to their teachings. But the added traditions doesn’t come from revelation to the person creating the traditions, just from the revelations of the apostles. That makes sense now.

Think of it this way Falisrm,

God has revealed Himself throughout time … that is revealtion … in the hebrew scriptures we a record of the revelationes prior to the time God wntered into time in the person of Jesus… Please note that the Hebrew People did not consider that all of God nor all of God’s Self revealtions were contained in the writings…

Jesus entered into time [being fully Divine in nature and fully human in nature - a mystery - yes] and taught [revealed Himself - the Father and Holy Spirit along with salvation history and *so much more such that the world could not contain all that he did and taught] the Apostles and the also others - disciples and common people - jews, samaritans and gentiles …

The New Testiment Scriptures that we have grew out of the teachings [revelations] but they do not contain all that was revealed. Also, note that these New Testiment Writings grew out of the Traditions, the recollections of the Apostles and were not peened suring the time Jesus walked the earth … they arise from the Church [founded by Jesus on Peter] and the Traditions … these scriptures are not the revealtions but a record of the rvelations and not a complete record at that …

The Church is entrusted with preserving and handing on the PUBLIC REVELATION of Jesus … .the “Bible” is just one aspect of how the Church has passed on this public revelation … We are bound - as followers of Christ - to submit ourselves to the authority of Christ through the organization he founded - the Church … We are to read the scriptures in light of the teaching of the Church -

Private revelation is binding only upon the person or persons who receive it … even if a revelation is determined “Worthy of belief” as is Fatima or Lourdes … a catholic is free to believe or not … follow the instructions [if there are any - like to pray a specific prayer or fast a certain day] or not follow the instructions -

The church takes a skeptical look at claims of private revelation and thankfully so … because for every valid claim of a revealtion there are probably 1000’s who claim a “message from God” that is are fraudulent, the result of mental illness, kookery or from Satan 😦
