The Vatican endangers its moral authority, should it renew the deal.
Mr. Pompeo at least found a welcome reception among the critics of Pope Francis who attended an event on religious freedom organized by Callista Gingrich, the U.S. ambassador to the Vatican. Upon his arrival, Mr. Pompeo gave a pat on the shoulder to Cardinal Raymond Burke, a leader of the conservative opposition to Francis within the church hierarchy.

Just more fruit of the poisoned tree called ex-Cardinal McCarrick.

I see there is disagreement with this from people I respect and ultimately, it is about the Chinese, Chinese Catholics.

Speaking before a Chinese Communist body recently, Bishop John Fang Xingyao said: “Love for the homeland must be greater than love for the Church.”

We have had reports of Churches having steeples torn down. I find no fault with anyone stepping up to face the Communist party. No problem.

Chinese officials burn bibles, close churches, force Christian to denounce faith amid ‘escalating’ crackdown

Some pundits say too, this may hurt the independent Catholic Church in Hong Kong.

The list goes on and on. I see little problem with questioning China.

The Vatican is in a position of near zero leverage in China. They’re attempting to slow down the inevitable full scale persecution that’s coming. I understand their reasoning for not meeting publicly. However they must understand that the current Chinese regime does not respect them.

China wants things one way, their way…

Good on the Pope for putting a stop to whatever was being attempted.

Playing politics doesnt help. No one knows what is going on behind the scenes.

I read the NYT article, as well as the Pompeo’s First Things article.

The tone of Pompeo’s actual article does not match the tone conveyed by the NYT…it comes across as intellectually dishonest.

Cardinal Burke is the “leader of the conservative opposition to Francis within the church hierarchy?” Really? Do you believe Burke is leading a schism?

Also, another interesting line from the NYT article:
“It’s to an appeal to an electorate that is bigger than the Catholic vote, it’s also the evangelical vote,” said Massimo Faggioli, a professor of theology and religious studies at Villanova University, who is supportive of Francis. “Being anti-pope helps with these Catholics but also evangelicals.”
Pompeo is “anti-pope”? The whole narrative here is this: Because Francis would not meet with Pompeo, Pompeo is working against Francis…Aligning with critics…appealing to anti-pope Catholics. Really?

In a twitter post, the author called the people that Pompeo met with “anti-Francis.” Calling Catholics “anti-pope” or “anti-Francis” without some evidence other than political disagreement is calumny.
