To my brothers and sisters in Christ.

For those of us who believe in Jesus Christ, the devil has been defeated. The Holy Spirit of God dwells within us and helps us in our times of temptation. We are told to pray often so that God will guide us in righteousness.

Today, pornography is everywhere. In gas stations, in convenience stores, and even supermarkets. Why? There are also so-called Adult Bookstores, and the internet is filled with it. How did this start?

In the 1940s and early 1950s, so-called risque magazines appeared. They were rightly considered dirty because they were meant to arouse lust in men. Gradually, as time passed, and because of lots of lawyers being paid lots of money, they became more and more graphic, and in 1970, explicit. The 1970s saw the flood of Adult Bookstores opening everywhere.

Once again, some thought it being legal somehow made it OK. Naturally, some young men, out of curiosity, bought some of these magazines and became addicted. And this addiction was as bad as drug addiction. It harmed the mind, the body and the soul. It reduced the dignity of the women portrayed to objects. To something less than what God made them to be – to be treated with respect and dignity. To be chaste, along with men, until marriage. This is who women are: human beings meant to be respected and loved as wives, sisters and daughters. Just like all human beings.

Now what is our Catholic response to this? As we are told to love our neighbor as ourselves, then we should show compassion on these women and treat them with respect. We should reject pornography in all its forms. Yes, at one time, in the 1950s, so-called art and photography magazines attempted to convince the sinner that this was about “art.” Nothing could be further from the truth.

Let us all agree, each one of us, to turn away from the exploitation of the beauty of women for inciting lust. Modesty is a virtue in word and dress.

Cancel your porn on cable or satellite. Stop going to Adult Bookstores. Get rid of your porn collection. Limit your viewing of the internet. Turn to God in prayer. He will forgive you if you ask Him. In the meantime, know that what you sow to the flesh yields corruption, but that God is waiting for you to turn away - to be restored. His love for you will bring you out of this. Trust Him.

Write to your Senator, Congressman and even the President. Tell them that pornography deadens the moral senses. That it leads to nothing good. I ask you, brothers and sisters, what do you get out of this? Would your time on earth be better spent doing something good, both for yourself and others?

God bless,
Ed

Men often do not understand how much their pornography use affects the women they love. When your husband/bf looks at porn, it is extremely hurtful. We wonder, “Am I not good enough? You really need to look at other women to fulfill your needs?” Men often counter this by saying they don’t love the women in those videos. “You’re the one with the ring on your finger.” Then, we wonder, who are you thinking about when we are together? If a man’s pornographic sexual experience means nothing, then what do his sexual experiences with his wife mean? No, staying chaste (even in marriage) may not be easy, but it is worth it. Boys who view porn need to step up and become men who fully love their wives.
