Receive the Holy Spirit

I’m trying to find the exact scripture passage in which Jesus asks if a father would give a rock to his child if he asks for a loaf of bread.
So your heavenly Father will give the Holy Spirit to whomever asks.

In Matthew 7-7 onwards it is more specific.Happy reading!

Is this the quotation from the Bible you are looking for?

That is the exact passage. I may know the various passages by heart, but not always by chapter and verse.

I have a question. About twelve days after my beloved husband passed away, I was watching TV, when I felt a presence. I immediately turned off the TV. I asked “Ed, is that you?” There was a beautiful aroma, which I cannot relate to any flower I have ever smelled. It was as if my husband’s spirit was standing behind my right shoulder and I felt him say “I love you and I don’t want you to cry.” Then he was gone and so was the aroma.

I have attributed this to a visit from the Holy Spirit because I cannot attribute it to any thing else. There have been two or three other occurences which I can only attribute to the Holy Spirit.

Am I wrong to believe this was a visit from the Holy Spirit? Nothing like this has ever happened in my life. I think some may think I am making this up, or that I am crazy. It actually happened. I would appreciate your thoughts.

Did you feel Christ’s Peace which is beyond understanding?
I do not discount your experience. God is close to the broken hearted.
I am not sure that sensing your husband’s spirit was actually the Holy Spirit, or your grief at work.
I do know that God is there to embrace us in our need.

For me, “receiving the Holy Spirit” is what happens at Baptism, when we receive the faith, the pearl of great price, to start living in Truth (who is Jesus) and communion with God.
“Being filled with the Holy Spirit” would, in the normal course, be the gradual and progressive flowering of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit in our lives, usually the fruit of many “conversions”, large and small, in our journey of sanctification.
One sure sign of being “filled with the Holy Spirit”, for me, is a growing zeal to share the Good News with others - as opposed to just treasuring it ourselves.
That is why we pray, “Come Holy Spirit and FILL the hearts of your faithful, and enkindle in them the fire of your love.” (Note, we are already “faithful” to the Spirit, but we’re asking for more - to be filled with a fiery love).
That’s the fire that makes us love others enough to go to great lengths to bring them too to an experience of God’s love and goodness. To help bring about God’s Kingdom on earth.
And that’s exactly what the Apostles began to do after Pentecost (for them the “filling” was instantaneous), with many of them eventually giving their very lives to the mission.

I’ve never replied to a thread before. But, I wanted to assure you that God does allow communication between those who have passed in his friendship and those of us left grieving. Although, I’m quite sure that the Holy Spirit facilitated this message to you I’m also sure that your husband can use your prayers if he’s still in purgatory. If he’s already in heaven then you have your own saint to help you through the rest of this life and you are also very blessed. Pray, listen and remember everything good is confirmed by God in more goodness.

Maybe someone else could help you with scripture references but I just wanted to let you know you haven’t lost your mind and you need to do what your doing looking towards God and listen.

I’ve heard others say that after their baptism in the Spirit, what they experienced was an incredible hunger for spiritual knowledge. They couldn’t read enough or learn enough about their faith.

Confirmation is supposed to be the releasing of the power of the Holy Spirit, who we received at Baptism. I don’t know if a Confirmation can’t “take” or maybe isn’t allowed to grow as God means it to. I don’t understand why it should make any more of a difference than the sacrament of Confirmation, but I do believe that there’s something to the baptism of the Spirit.

I love the charismatic movement, but I also have noted too many Catholic charismatics leaving the church and adopting all kinds of crazy notions. Charismatics with a devotion to Mary seem to stay safe. Again, my opinion.

You would have been broken hearted and Jesus may have sent one of his angels to comfort you.Similar incidents of this nature have been recorded and you are not alone.God Bless You.

Yes, I did feel peace, and a kind of elation. It was very comforting as I knew Ed was OK.

What you say is true. Also, human nature is at work. It’s always painful to grow.
But also, the mediocrity of the past and the complacency of others poses a challenge
to us all. You may become the odd one out. Why? Because you are alive in the Spirit!
Most people don’t wear Jesus on their sleeve. Charismatics tend to. That’s to their credit I think. And Mary is a mother par excellence. As well as a good friend.
I believe that all graces from the Holy Spirit pass through her hands. Stay hungry. It brings more and more of the Holy Spirit.
