Received Confirmation (at 16), never Penance (which would have been 10)

What does everyone think about such a situation?

Didn’t receive the sacrament in 4th grade when the rest of my class did. Confirmation class was six years later.

They assumed I did.

(I could have brought this issue up even if it didn’t involve me.)

It is unusual but in even the poorest sacramental prep would have you go to confession.

That being said you are not required to have a “first penance”. Read up, visit a priest and go for it.

Your confirmation is still valid. I concur with Sunshine, that you should study up and visit your priest for confession. You should be sure to explain your situation, though I don’t think it will be a big deal. You can’t be responsible if your sacramental prep didn’t provide you the opportunity before your confirmation.

It is unusual indeed, though individual issues of the rarest sense are unusual and that is my situation. It was beyond wanting to, there are issues with some individual that makes them unable to do things.

Ok, you are being intentionally vague. That’s fine, it’s not anyone’s business but your own. However, you are asking for opinions. So, forgive me if I stray but I am going to read between the lines a bit:

– it seems that you were given the opportunity to make a First Confession prior to your First Holy Communion and again to receive the sacrament of Confession prior to your Confirmation

– for whatever reason, you chose not to avail yourselves of those opportunities.

– neither Sacrament requires prior Confession to be valid

– however, receiving the graces of the Sacrament of Confirmation requires you to have been in a state of grace. If you were not at the time, the grace will flow when you return to the state of grace by going to Confession

– receiving Communion also requires being in a state of grace so that would need to be mentioned in your Confession

I would just bring this up with your priest, he will know what to do. That being said where have you been? Penance should be at absolute min. once a year. Much better to be once a month or even every week if possible.

Well, actually, as has been pointed out many times, Canon Law 989 requires us only to go annually if we are conscious of mortal sin. It is not a blanket requirement (but, of course, confession of venial sins is encouraged by the Church).

Well, actually, as has been pointed out many times, Canon Law 989 requires us only to go annually if we are conscious of mortal sin. It is not a blanket requirement (but, of course, confession of venial sins is encouraged by the Church).

ok, if you want to be picky the canon law requirement is to go annually if conscious of “grave sin”. The other two requirements for mortal sin do not have to be met for the once-a-year requirement to apply.
