And, I might add, nobody paid attention to Pope Paul VI when he DIDN’T allow it, so what makes you think his removing permissions would change the way people receive?
Isn’t that the truth…we have an entire church in America in large defiance of Church teaching now.

How convenient for you!

I’m not the enemy here; we’re all brothers and sisters! I receive on the tongue too! All I’m saying is that you can’t fault people for choosing an option that was made available to them. Until that option is taken away, who are you, or we, to tell people not to use that option?
Look…Catholics have the “option” of only receiving Holy Communion once a year. You have the “option” of only going to confession once a year…once a month, etc. But is there a preference for receiving Christ’s Body and Blood more often? Does it help in our spiritual growth to confess more often?

Bottom line is you’re right…you have that OPTION. Only point being made here is recieving our Lord on the tongue is preferable for MANY different reasons…all outlined here.

Communion on the tongue was not “the” original way. I read somewhere that the reason they stopped communion in the hand was because of abuses: hosts were saved and then used in satanic masses, etc.
Clearly the “original” way of receiving our Lord’s Body and Blood was not on the tongue as the first celebration of the Eucharist was at the last “supper”. And since most adults aren’t fed their supper but “feed” themselves, I think this starting point is fair to assume.

But needs change. And just as there were reasons to encourage and/or mandate communion on the tongue in the past, we are entering another similar period now. Perhaps not because the majority of people receiving in the hand are using the consecrated Host for malicious purposes, but more so because of the degredation of people’s understanding of the sanctity of the Blessed Body of our Lord in the Eucharist.

Really? Which Church is that?
Well I’m not aware of a published list of them but you can find dissenters in defiance of the Church in nearly every Diocese in the country and you don’t have to go far to find them. You only need to open your eyes, ears and mind to identify them.

Don’t take this wrong but are you being sincere? Are you really unaware of the open defiance going on in the Church, particularly in America, today?

Is this the rule? I haven’t seen anyone receive from the lay on the tongue. I have not tried it myself. It may embarass the layperson.
Are you not supposed to receive on the tongue from a lay person? I have a young child whom I’m usually holding so its impractical for me to receive in my palm, while trying to keep her from landing on her head as she’s squirming, but I also always go to my Priest because he always blesses my child and I like that. But I’ve received on the tongue for nearly ten years too.

Um…are you being deliberately obtuse, or do you really think the majority of the Catholic Church in America is in line with Church teachings?
Of course I believe that the majority is in line with Catholic teaching. I also believe that phrases like, “we have an **entire **church in America in large defiance of Church teaching now,” not to mention the answering of posts with eye rolling smilies, reveal more about the attitude of the posters than any given factual information. Obtuse? How blind does one have to be to think that the whole Church (in America) has departed from the faith (except their sect, of course). There is a psychological boost from an elitism that sees oneself and one’s clique as the last surviving remnant. I will not drink the Kool-aid.

I am not being obtuse, but rather sincerely see far more orthodoxy than departure from the faith. I defy anyone to show me where the Vatican has declared this “obvious” apostacy that some here take as a given.

All Eucharistic Ministers must make sure that the host is put into the recipient’s mouth before they allow the person to leave their presence. I know of EMs who have followed a person to make sure and told him/her to put it into his/her mouth “now.” This should be standard protocol in every parish.

As far as “degradation of understanding,” we are definitely in a time period of loss of belief in the Holy Eucharist, but I do not think that making it mandatory to receive It on the tongue will solve this real problem of “unbelief” in the Real Presence. If a person truly believes the Holy Eucharist to be the Body and Blood of Christ, then they will treat It as such, unless they are only there to steal a Host for diabolical reasons. What many people do not realize is that Satanists steal them because “they” do believe that It is the Body and Blood of Christ!

Personally, I feel the exact same way about It whether I receive Holy Eucharist on the tongue or in the hand. I treat It with the most reverence that I possibly can. I adore It with my eyes as I raise It slowly up to my mouth. I do make a throne out of my hands just as the people in the early church did.

Uhhhhh … Have you been to a mainstream Catholic Church in the past 40 years?
I never miss Mass and attend a mainstrean Catholic Church with a parish full of other faithful Catholics who are totally faithful the the teachings of the Holy Father and obedience the the Magisterium. There is a reason to call it “mainstream”. It is where most of the Church is. Rather than look for evil in other parishes and pat myself on the back like the Pharisee of old that I am not like them, I look and see many good, faithful bishops, priests and laity.

So when someone refers to the “entire Church in America” being in defiance, I do not know what they are referring to. Such an opinion about the Catholic Church is ludricous.

Never. I have also never seen any crumbs. I have seen the Precious Blood spilled (a little). Twice. Each time everything stopped while a purification cloth was placed over it until after Mass.

I actually think such disruptions serve a valuable purpose as a visual demonstration of our belief in the reality the Real Presence. Originally posted by Pnewton

In all my years attending mass I’ve only seen the Precious Body dropped once. My wonderful Priest genuflected, picked it up and ate it himself then turned back to the elderly woman who’d dropped it. It wasn’t really her fault as she suffered from Parkingsons and had unpredictable trembles and her hand kind of colided with his and the Precious Body just went flying. I say our Priest was wonderful because he was able to recovere quietly and descretely and not make this sweet woman feel bad or anything.

This is the “Vatican/pope hasn’t excommunicated anyone so it must not be a problem” argument.

The Church in American is VERY, very sick. There is widespread dissent. There is also widespread orthodoxy and it, contrary to the dissenters, is growing and spiritually healthy. So like many times in the past, it (the laity) will demand orthodoxy among the leadership.

This is the “Vatican/pope hasn’t excommunicated anyone so it must not be a problem” argument.
I didn’t ask for whether the Church has been excommunicated. I asked if the Vatican had even made a statement tha supported what people say here. So I am not using the above arguement.

No, this is the “I am going beyond what the Chuch has said” arguement that I am dealing with, or as I put it, the “Holier than the Pope” mindset.

When a claim as far-fetched as was made above is thrown out, a lack of evidence from the Church to support the contention makes it more a product of the psychology of those who desire to be a “Remnant” than a reality.

Priests sadly have no right to do that much less EMHCs.

Rarely is such a complex problem “solved” by a single thing but it could be a critical and powerful part of catechesis.

Really? May I share a story with you that I experienced in the last few weeks and get your personal feelings on it?

I have long believed, to be honest, that a parish’s health can be crudely gauged by how many people receive Holy Communion on the tongue. The reason I believe this was communicated in a homily at my parish recently on the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ.

Father homilized about how when he purifies the ciborium after the liturgy of the Eucharist, small particles of the consecrated Host float to the top of the water. He then proceeded to asked that if this happens from consecrated Hosts merely sitting in a ciborium, what did we think happened having Christ’s Body and Blood placed in our hand and then from our hand into our mouth? Why undoubtedly small particles of Christ’s Body end up on the floor.

In the short period of a 10 minute homily, on ONE Sunday, at ONE Mass, ONE priest educated numerous people and catechized about the TRUE presence of Christ. And guess what happened. EMHC who otherwise receive communion in the hand…received on the tongue. A significant and observable number of people receiving communion ALSO received that Sunday on the tongue than I have observed for countless Sundays past.

What spoke to these people’s heart? Where is the priest’s reasoning wrong about respecting the Body and Blood of Christ? And how is this not an example of catechizing about receiving on the tongue increases people’s appreciation for the true presence and respect for it?

So, because YOUR parish is good, the abuses are just figments of our imagination? 🤷

Also, not to be cynical and bitter, but I really wonder how many of the young couples in your parish are contracepting. I’d bet it’s more than you’re willing to admit.

No you didn’t ask if the “Church” had been excommunicated…it couldn’t be anyhow. You asked in essence which dissenters/people had been or had been rebuked by Rome…people are excommunicated.
No, this is the “I am going beyond what the Chuch has said” arguement that I am dealing with, or as I put it, the “Holier than the Pope” mindset.
This is a rather ironic statement (holier than the pope argument) given the nature of our discussion…which is my disapproval of dissenters (i.e., people who think THEY are holier than the pope) and your denial of them.

And if you do think this you clearly have me mistaken with someone else. I will be first in line to rebuke those who think they have the ability to make decisions that the pope has not made or can not make…like women priests,…pro abortion policies…etc.

But the flip side of this coin is recognizing our weaknesses. Recognizing our shortcomings. Recognizing those things we need to improve on. As I’ve said before, the Church, particularly in America, is very, very sick. But the good news is there is a revival among the orthodox faithful, which will, as it has in the past, put Church leaders on the right path.
When a claim as far-fetched as was made above is thrown out, a lack of evidence from the Church to support the contention makes it more a product of the psychology of those who desire to be a “Remnant” than a reality.
I find it hard to believe that you really don’t recognize the problems in the Church. But if you don’t that’s fine…it takes all sorts in the Church. We don’t all need to be alike in our gifts. You and others are sure to go on thinking there is nothing wrong and failing to recognize the dissenters and heterodoxy in the Church, but your prayers and the grace you receive from the faithful exercise of your Catholicism, will still benefit of the Church in the strugle nevertheless. Others will go about exercising their rights as baptized laity to demand faithfullness of its priests, bishops and laity to the Church they profess faith in.

So, because YOUR parish is good, the abuses are just figments of our imagination? 🤷
Yet it belies the statement that was made about the entire Church in America.
Also, not to be cynical and bitter, but I really wonder how many of the young couples in your parish are contracepting. I’d bet it’s more than you’re willing to admit.
Does this question often come up much during reception of communion?

I guess I am just weary of all the Catholic-bashing from both within and without the Church. Yes, I will acknowledge there are sinners in the Church. How many contracept is irrelevant. The Church will always be full of sinners and not all have arrived like some have. The question of how many acknowledge the Church’s teaching on contraception is the only pertinent measure. That has nothing to do with reception of the Eucharist. It sickens me to see this topic being turned to another chance to bash the Church.

(Donation for the Bishop’s Annual appeal, 500 dollars; weekly envelopes for the Parish, 50 dollars; pnewton’s reply–priceless! That made me laugh out loud when I read it, pnewton.)

The Vatican says, lay person or even the extra ordinary layperson’s “should not take the Blessed Host by their own hand for communion”, it should be received from the authorized lay persons other than the priest. It did not specified that we should received communion by hand or by the tongue but it is clearly understood that we will not take it by ourselves. Kneeling or standing in receiving communion is permitted (it is an individual reverence in receiving the Body of Christ). For my self I prefer to kneel down.

Your brother in Christ
