Hello all, had a question come up from my wife the other day about receiving communion every day. We were taught that one can and should attend daily mass and receive communion as often as it is available (just once a day). My wife was told by an older relative that you should not receive communion so often, that Sunday would suffice for the week.

So with all things being equal (in a state of grace, had confession, no other restrictions . . . )
does the church say how often one should receive communion?

Daily, if possible!

Jesus to St. Gertrude: “My delights are to be with the children of men. To satisfy My love I instituted this Sacrament. I remain thus with them until the end of the world, and I desire that they receive Me frequently.

Here in the UK I understand that so long as the state of your soul permits, you may receive Holy Communion up to twice in a day.

I have gone to Mass three times in a day, and received Communion at two of them. Deo Gratias.

Yes we can receive twice a day but only in the context of Mass. Such as Morning Mass and later a Funeral Mass. God Bless, Memaw

I thought you could go to Mass daily, but I thought you were only to receive Holy Communion once a day. Except maybe someonre could attend a Saturday morning Mass and then a Saturday evrning Mass which fulfills the Sunday obligation. Not sure.

Ask your priest, it is twice a day now. God Bless, Memaw

I’ve started to attend daily and I have been advised max of 2 communion per day :).

God Bless!

Yes, but the second reception MUST be in the context of Mass (not a Communion service), except in cases of Extreme Unction/Last Rites.

Mass/Mass: Okay
Communion service/Mass: Okay
Other proper time/Mass: Okay

Mass 1st/Anything else second: Not okay

I am confused.
Of course, I think I got my info from CAF.

Quoting from the above:
Accordingly, the Sacred Congregation of the Council, in a Plenary Session held on December 16,1905, submitted this matter to a very careful study, and after sedulously examining the reasons adduced on either side, determined and declared as follows:
  1. Frequent and daily Communion, as a practice most earnestly desired by Christ our Lord and by the Catholic Church, should be open to all the faithful, of whatever rank and condition of life; so that no one who is in the state of grace, and who approaches the Holy Table with a right and devout intention (recta piaque mente) can be prohibited therefrom.

But the chief aim of
our efforts must be that the frequent reception of the Eucharist may be everywhere revived among Catholic peoples.

From: w2.vatican.va/content/john-paul-ii/en/encyclicals/documents/hf_jp-ii_enc_20030417_eccl-de-euch.html
… the Church has drawn up norms **aimed both at fostering the frequent and fruitful access of the faithful to the Eucharistic table **and at determining the objective conditions under which communion may not be given. The care shown in promoting the faithful observance of these norms becomes a practical means of showing love for the Eucharist and for the Church.

Does the exception made for Last Rites dispense only with the requirement that the second reception of communion occur during Mass, or does it also dispense with the rule that communion is not to be received more than twice a day?

Both.
Code of Canon Law:
Can. 917 One who has received the blessed Eucharist may receive it again on the same day only within a eucharistic celebration in which that person participates, without prejudice to the provision of can. 921 §2.

Can. 921 §1 Christ’s faithful who are in danger of death, from whatever cause, are to be strengthened by holy communion as Viaticum.

§2 Even if they have already received holy communion that same day, it is nevertheless strongly suggested that in danger of death they should communicate again.

§3 While the danger of death persists, it is recommended that holy communion be administered a number of times, but on separate days.
