How many times in a single day may I consume the Holy Eucharist?

Specific situation: As an Extraordinary Minister of the Holy Eucharist and as one who attends daily morning Mass - there are times when I’ve been asked to fill in for someone to assist at Communion even though I’ve already been to Mass Sunday Morning. Is it “lawful” to receive the Holy Eucharist as a lay-person? Say the second Mass is at 11:00 am; or possibly the second Mass is at the evening 5:00 service.

Thanks for your help on this.

You can receive a second time in the same day, provided that second time is at a Mass in which you have participated.

The second Mass should not be the same Mass. In other words, you might go to the Sunday liturgy in the morning and a nuptual Mass in the afternoon. As an EMCH, I would respectfully decline should I be asked to distribute Communion at the second Mass. The exception, of course, would be if the liturgy is different. An example of when you might receive twice is Divine Mercy Sunday. A person might go to the regular Second Sunday in Easter Mass in the morning and celebrate Divine Mercy in the afternoon. The readings for the Vigil Masses of Christmas and Easter are different than the Sunday readings. In making a determination of whether or not to receive Communion a second time, I would look at the readings for the Mass. You can always ask the priest.

I’m sorry but you’re wrong. The Church doesn’t make that distinction. You can attend the 8 am and the 9 am Sunday Mass and receive Communion both times.

You can receive with a parent or friend at their hospital bedside at 8 am and then go to Mass and receive an hour later.

On the other hand, you MAY NOT go to Mass and receive then receive again at the hospital bedside.

Can. 917 A person who has already received the Most Holy Eucharist can receive it a second time on the same day only within the eucharistic celebration in which the person participates, without prejudice to the prescript of ⇒ can. 921, §2.

Can. 921 §1. The Christian faithful who are in danger of death from any cause are to be nourished by holy communion in the form of Viaticum.

§2. Even if they have been nourished by holy communion on the same day, however, those in danger of death are strongly urged to receive communion again.

Thanks, I forgot how to find the canon. This is the best answer for the OP.
Many parishes have several Masses presided by a single priest. With permission of the bishop (later in the Canon), he can of necessity receive more than twice. I too wanted to point to Viaticum. While we are not prohibited from receiving more than once, it is often discouraged since we never know when we might find ourselves "in danger of death."I have been at the vigil Mass for Christmas and other times when the priest specially invited all to return in the morning. Included with the invitation was the assurance that, yes, we could receive Communion again. The parish provided breakfast after the morning Mass.

But even if you’ve received twice that day, if you find yourself in danger of death you may receive a third time.

To re-iterate what others have said: You may ordinarily receive twice in a single day, as long as the second time is at a eucharistic celebration at which you participate. In danger of death, I believe you may receive a third time.

However: Nothing requires you to receive, even when you assist at Communion as an EMHC. If you are not capable, disposed, or comfortable receiving, you can still assist. Just don’t receive.
