A Letter from Our Cathedral Rector

Dear Parishioners,

I want to thank all of you who have recently started receiving Holy Communion on the tongue, not to mention those of you who already had been. This subject has generated a lot of buzz over the past few weeks, the vast majority of which has been overwhelmingly positive.

While my main objective in encouraging reception on the tongue is to deepen appreciation for the Eucharist, I also have a pastoral responsibility to eliminate abuses common to receiving in the hand. Such abuses are no doubt unintentional.

Nevertheless, what I witness troubles me. And I’m not alone.

Amen. I love it!

My mom is a Eucharistic minister sometimes, and often reports frustration with the abuses of receiving in the hand (including a mother who gave her small child a bite of the host!).
 
I don’t know…I receive in the hand…but I don’t do any of those mentioned above…truly and honestly.

Seriously…wrap your hand around him and walk away with him at your side? That’s odd.

There can be abuses on the tongue as well…they are just not as common place.

One co-worker wanted to know when she found out I was Catholic if I played the game of open your mouth after MAss and stick out your tongue to see who still had Jesus undissolved…😦

The difference is we are well catechized, at least in this aspect. Many are not.

I know. I’ve been to an EF Mass and as I was kneeling down and praying after receiving, the kid who was behind me was walking down the aisle back to his pew. He was playing with the Host on his tongue as if it were a piece of candy, sticking it out and in his mouth.
 
When we had our class on Eucharistic Theology, the teacher (soon to be deacon) was telling us how we had the choice of receiving in the hand or on the tongue, but that at our parish most received in the hand (I’ve been to enough Masses to know this.)
Then he said, “I can say from an EMs perspective, that we prefer you receive on the hand…sometimes it is hard to get the host on the tongue, sometimes they don’t have their mouth open wide enough and it’s confusing, etc…”

Then he proceeded to tell us (in almost the next sentence) about the unfortunate abuses he has witnessed, including a mother breaking the host up to give to her kids.

Well catechized Catholics can receive reverently on the hand. I’ve heard of a story of a mom who gave a piece of the Host from her mouth to her child, so I don’t see how COTT could have prevented that.
 
Absolutely never open your mouth and close your eyes in the presence of a priest,at least not in a church.

So if Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to protect the Church, “the gates of hell shall not prevail,” do you really think bankrupting the Church would end it? If this would in fact end the Church, did Jesus lie?

I never would have know had you not shared your brilliant advice. Did Lazarrus know? This changes everything. no wonder Arron and the gand made the golden calf while moses was on the mountain…wow:blush:
