Hello,

Yesterday I went to mass twice and received communion twice, at different parishes.

Have I sinned?

You can receive communion twice in a day as long as the second time is in the context of a Mass.

I’m interested in your question of “have I sinned?” If I were in a situation where I thought was I was about to do was sinful, then I wouldn’t do it. I’d ask afterward so I’d know for the next time – “I was at a second Mass yesterday but didn’t receive communion because I thought it might not be allowed. What should I do if this happens again?”

You’re not required to receive communion every time you go to Mass.

Nope, not a sin.

Here are the relvant canons from the Code of Canon Law:

Can. 917 A person who has already received the Most Holy Eucharist can receive it a second time on the same day only within the eucharistic celebration in which the person participates, without prejudice to the prescript of can. 921, §2.

Can. 921 §2. Even if they have been nourished by holy communion on the same day, however, those in danger of death are strongly urged to receive communion again.

As SMD said, you can receive twice so long as the second time is within the context of the Mass (which you said it was). And you could even receive a 3rd time in that day if you were in danger of death.

Thanks for your answers

I know and I feel let down by myself that didn’t choose not to receive the second time. Even though it wasn’t sinful it shows a lack of restraint. My reasons were:
  1. I thought it was OK because I definitely had not eaten within an hour beforehand.
  2. There were many non-Catholics at the second mass and the priest said for them not to receive and I didn’t want anyone to confuse me for one of them.

no, why would you think so? you may receive communion twice on one day if the second reception is in the context of a full Mass you attend. You may even receive a third time should you need viaticum later in the day.

and why would you ever be concerned about what bystanders think about you doing a pious, worthy permissible act? or about you not receiving on any given day? why is that even an issue?

It is no lack of restraint to receive Holy Communion twice in the same day.

It is less than praiseworthy to receive Holy Communion out of a desire to enjoy some position of superiority or to indulge something other than an increase of grace and virtue. Having said that, those reasons can be present when one is receiving for the first time of the week.

lack of restraint?
I completely fail to understand your thinking.

YOu actually think you have to be restrained from receiving communion? Why on earth? I am concerned at what someone may be telling you that brings up these wrong ideas and causes you needless concern.

You fail to understand my posts, you clearly don’t have a clue what my thinking is. Is English your first language? I meant self-restraint, not being restrained by others.

Do I really have to explain this?
  1. I was unsure whether it was the right thing to do.
  2. On the basis that I wasn’t sure, I shouldn’t have received the second time.
  3. I received anyway.
  4. This shows a lack of restraint (other words I could use include self-control, discipline).
I hope you agree that if someone is unsure whether it is right to do something, they should choose not to do it.

Anyway my question was answered before I made the first reply. I have no desire to continue this discussion.

Peace

If a person is uncertain whether it’s proper to receive communion for a third or fourth time in a single day, he should exercise self-restraint and not receive. Later he can find out that his action was prudent, since it’s not permitted to receive more than twice.

The OP didn’t exercise similar self-restraint regarding a second reception; luckily his action is permitted.

And frankly it sounds like the OP did what he did because it seemed appropriate at the time, NOT because he was carefully considering the issue and finally decided, “I don’t care what the rules may be, I’m gonna have me a second communion!”
