receiving communion

while in mortal sin…can you really stop someone from receiving. (And then again maybe I really dont want to know. )

My friend is in mortal sin and she went up today to receive. After I told her that it was wrong and she shouldn’t.

Her God says it’s okay… My God forbids it… yet we are both Catholics… how does that work?

You are right… God forbids it. But he’s given us freewill so your friend is free to continue sinning by receiving communion. I don’t think you can physically stop your friend… you can pray for her though.

As a Catholic she should realise that receiving while in a state of mortal sin is a mortal sin itself so she is compounding her sins. Why does she think what she thinks? She could quickly realise her mistake by going to Confession or even talking to a priest outside Confession.

You can’t stop your friend from receiving in that state of Mortal Sin. She is wrong and I know how frustrated you are because I too go through this with people in my family that just dont get it. All we can do is pray, pray, pray, and then pray some more for those who do this. Let the Holy Spirit work on your friends heart. God will take care of this in his time, be patient I know it’s hard.

How do you know for certain she is in a state of mortal sin? Could she have went to confession without you knowing about it? I don’t really want details of her sin, I just want to know if you are 100% certain she is in fact in a state of mortal sin.

This issue is speaking to my soul. I have a friend, a fallen away Catholic who is living in a gay relationship. Six months ago he asked me to take him to Church. The first 4 times he went, he did not receive. The 5th time, he looked at me right before Communion and said, “I’m going up.” I was distraught, of course, but I prayed for him all the way up the the altar. After Mass, he asked me what I thought about him receiving. I told him the truth about the importance of being in a state of grace, but also said that the Holy Spirit was in charge of him, not me. He has gone to Mass with me almost every week since then and continues to receive.

I am so distraught over this. I’ve spoken to two priests and got two conflicting suggestions. I am meeting with my Pastor this week to ask his guidance. I understand your dilema completely. I get so upset that the priests never seem to speak on this matter. After all, how is it possible that absolutely EVERYONE in Church can receive communion every single Sunday???

Apparently you guys haven’t heard of the new rules on receiving. In a state of Mortal Sin, go for it, mortal sin probably doesn’t exist anymore anyway, but just in case it does, no problem, Christ will understand, Not Catholic, doesn’t matter, all churches have value and truth, so go for it, Christ will understand, Not even Christian, even better, go for it, Christ will definitely understand. As you well know Christ had no expectations or rules for those who followed Him. In fact, He probably changed His viewpoint to fit theirs so they wouldn’t be uncomfortable or feel judged… No priest available for the consecration, no problem, do it your self and go for it, after all Christ will understand. 👍
 
My own cousins while attending a family funeral decided even though they have married outside of the church, that it is ok for them to receive communion so they have done so.

The only thing we can do is pray for their conversion. They have a free will and there is nothing more that you or I can do except mention to them how they can reconcile with the Lord. After that, it’s up to God and them.

One of our Priests speaks about sin all the time. He tells us to dress modestly - rebukes parents for letting their teenage daughters dress like hookers - tells us to quit chewing gum and talking during mass… DON’T YOU KNOW THAT YOU ARE IN THE PRESENCE OF THE MOST HOLY GOD!!!" He talks about the GRAVE MORTAL SIN of missing mass and how we should not come up for communion until we go to confession. He recently said that there is NO WAY a person can be both pro-choice and Catholic. He said that the Catholic Church will never support the murder of the unborn and no good Catholic would either. He also talks about the evils of artificial birth control and how using it is sinful and displeasing to God.

Needless to say, he’s the least popular of our Priests. People complain that he is way too strict, critical and harsh. I happen to love him though and I pray for him all the time. I think of him as a loving father trying to warn his children that we must obey… our souls depend on it.
 
I was told that even the priest can’t refuse giving communion to someone - even if they know they should not. It is between the person and God.

A priest not only can, but should, not admit one for Holy Communion if he knows the person to be in a state of mortal sin.

Here’s a quote from the Code of Canon Law, emphasis mine:
Can. 915 Those upon whom the penalty of excommunication or interdict has been imposed or declared, and others who obstinately persist in manifest grave sin, are not to be admitted to holy communion.

CORAL MARIE, make sure you tell this priest what a wonderful job he is doing and please keep it up no matter how much grief he get’s. these kind of priest need to know they are doing a good job.

I do tell him all the time… I just love his homilies. The last time I was standing in line to tell him a woman about 60 years old walked right up to him and said, “What you said was JUST PLAIN RUDE!” And she stormed off. Can you even believe that? He said he’s always getting letters from people who tell him that their reproductive “choices” are none of HIS or anyone else’s business. 😦 I think being a Priest - espcially a good Priest who isn’t afraid to tell it like it is… must be such a difficult job. May God bless them all.
 
This is what I struggle with:

  1. *]Scripture tells us that we must be of one accord
    *]Church tells us not to receive communion in mortal sin
    *]Not going to Mass is a mortal sin.

    Yesterday my friend and I attend a family funeral. My relatives that are catholic but DON’T go to church went to receive communion. My friend who is in mortal sin goes to receive communion. I keep my butt in that pew because I THINK I know better.

    After much thought this is what I have come up with. The God that I know is very strong, strict, challenging, loving, compassionate and merciful. I know that I am very strict with myself, I am hard on myself. Yet, I can be loving an compassionte too.

    My friend is very relaxed, light spirited, carefree and non committed. I feel that the God she knows is also this way. That’s why she can receive communion and not give it a second thought. In her words, “God is love, don’t you believe that? Don’t you believe in the love of Jesus. He knows everything, this is in his plan. He knows my sin before I commit it. So why shouldn’t I receive communion.”

I’d rather have a priest like that than a “Fr. Friendly” who sugar-coats everything so that it is more acceptable. Jesus didn’t sugar-coat anything even if it meant that people walked away.

Once a month I attend Mass in Virginia. The priest there is an absolute joy! He speaks his mind, tells it like it is and pretty much has a “this is how it is attitude”. He is loud, isn’t afraid of " beating the grass to scare the snakes" and NO ONE ever leaves before he does. The church is an old one, the architecture is gorgeous, there are altar boys with those “plates” for communion. There is lots of singing by a choir. I told Fr. Jerry that there should be more priests like him. I’d take him over "Fr. B. My Friend " anyday.

It concerns me that some of us feel it’s our duty to tattle to the priest about the sins of others. This is defintely between the sinner and God.

If the priest KNOWS (through his own means) that someone is receiving communion in a state of sin, he might take that person aside after Mass, if possible, and invite that person to come to confession soon. He could say something like “I’ve missed you at confession…”.

As for the sinner’s friends, we should pray for them and drop a subtle hint (at most).
