I remember watching a news report on this, can’t remember where, but in the report it stated that the Pope wanted to remind the world that this was still the normal way to recieve communion withhin, the Church, though it is permitted to stand and recieve in the hands. This article seems to state it is when receiving from the Pope only.

I made my 1st Communion way after Vatican II, 1987, and we still knelt at the rails at the alter, and recieved on the tongue, even though it was Novus Ordo. This was the case at this particluar Church for many years. In the other Church / Chapel in the parish, while standing, you still recieved on the tongue. This may have been due to the instructions of the priest at the time, (who while tradtional on some aspects, was considered a deep and holy man by many who would ask him to intercede for them, my father included, and something I also believe.) At some point, I don’t rember when exactly, standing and recieving in this Church was permitted, and became the norm, although the alter rails are still there.
Would this priest have needed some kind of dispensation for the congregation kneeling.
I will always remember a sermon, when referring to recieving the Eucharist, this priest said that there where those looking to recieve on the hands, and ‘their hands were by no means clean.’ Presumably spiritually as well as physically.
Considering Benedict VI’s statement, "Kneeling and receiving Communion on the tongue highlights “the truth of the real presence (of Christ) in the Eucharist, helps the devotion of the faithful and introduces the sense of mystery more easily”, can anyone see this practice becoming more widespread in the Church generally, as I outlined, I never realized it was officially gone. Would anyone hope that this will become the case?

I would love to kneel while receiving the Eucharist. I grew up Lutheran and it was the norm at the church I went to to kneel at the alter. Of course we didn’t receive it on the tongue, but I did enjoy the kneeling. So I think it’d be a great thing to start back up with in the Catholic churches that don’t currently do this.
Honestly though I’m not sure if it will become more of a common practice though. After becoming Catholic, I graduated college and moved back home, so right now I’m not a formal member of any parish and so I go to a number of parishes in my community and that of my boyfriend’s. And actually, it seems like many places it’s becoming more lax in things. Many of the churches don’t continue to kneel while the members go up to receive the Eucharist. After the first pew starts to line up, the people sit down. And some also only kneel for a minute or so after receiving the Eucharist and sit down while the others are still lining up to receive it. So to me, in these communities that do it this way, I don’t see them kneeling as they receive the Eucharist as they’ve already stopped kneeling during the whole Communion ceremony (sorry don’t know the proper term).

I will allow this discussion since it is current news, but please don’t discuss whether or not it is better to receive one way or the other. I will close the thread if it devolves into yet another fight over this issue.
