Receiving from the Cup and facial hair

How about women who leave massive lipstick marks on the cup? We are receiving from a communal cup and there are certain things that go along with that.

Probably people that get down all the time and wash each other’s feet aren’t supposed to notice!

The lipstick marks are a pet peeve of mine, especially when they require quite a little “scrub” with the purificator to remove them, which isn’t good for the good plate on the cup, and leave stains on the purificators that are a pain to remove. (Yes, linen will eventually scratch a gold-plated cup. Gold is very soft.)

I wouldn’t bar everyone who wears lipstick from receiving…just ask that they please use a “light lip” and try to choose a brand for Sunday that doesn’t stain so much.

Does it sound like when Jesus took His last breath dying for you? He left the cup of His Precious Blood for you. You do not have to receive but please don’t turn it into comedy. If you are truly repulsed by receiving from the cup then we can respect that but please do not be so descriptive that it sounds like you are making light of the Sacrament. This is a very special and infinite gift of love and Jesus gave His life for your opportunity to share in His sacrifice. I’m sorry if this sounds like a lecture but it just struck a nerve with me. As a EMHC, I can say that I have not seen obvious evidence of backwash or lost whiskers (I look), I haven’t gotten knocked over by anyone’s breath, I haven’t seen any mustaches dripping, and people do seem to be brushing their teeth before Mass. So far, the question of what to do with obvious stuff like that has been totally theoretical, and until this thread didn’t even occur to me.

Maybe people are more aware of the solemnity of what they’re doing and how important hygiene is than they’re getting credit for. That is something to be thankful for.

I have received from the cup for years without incident. If someone chooses not to receive it is perfectly fine but let’s not degrade the Sacrament. I did not consider what I said to be graphic just possibilities. Anytime you have many people drinking from a common cup there are things to consider. I just mentioned those things but not in a way that would deter anyone from receiving. I just don’t think that people should use the term “gagging” or “dry heaves” when referring to the Eucharist. Teach, many parents do not approve or allow their children to drink alcohol & is not meant to be offensive to God.

Why should your friends acknowledge when passing by? Unless you mean they don’t acknowledge Blood of Christi?

I agree, and thankfully we have a choice. I choose the latter.

I wasn’t referring to the Eucharist itself…I was referring to the things you mentioned (back wash, people not brushing there teeth, etc.). I talked about dry heaving because of the pictures of guys with facial hair - it reminded me of mats of hair on my fathers Shitzu’s.

Please don’t hesitate to ask if you need further clarification concerning statements. You know what they say about assuming…

Me too.

I have a mustache that at times gets a little out of hand but I am very careful not to be inconsiderate to others by dipping my facial hair in the Precious Blood while taking a drink. It’s common sense and common courtesy.

Even when I am cleanly shaved I don’t take deep drinks from the cup anyhow. I like too make sure there is enough for the person behind me.

I never turned receiving from the cup into a comedy. I was reacting to YOUR “possibilities”. Take note, when I said, “Here come the dry heaves” it was under the picture of the men with facial hair - that comment was not under a picture of a chalice.

You made a massive accusation. Leaving it with an “It’s all good” is an insult, to say the least. Just because your assumptions were wrong doesn’t mean you should be able to bow out that easily. I deserve an apology.
