Receiving Holy Communion

i would like to ask about the above mention subject.

well one of my friend ask me this question which he quotes the Code of Canon Law.

Canon 917 A person who has already received the Most Holy Eucharist can receive it a second time on the same day only within the eucharistic celebration in which the person participates, without prejudice to the prescript of canon 921, §2.

So now my question is how many times can a faithful receive Holy Communion?
Where is it stated in canon law?
The second time that the faithful receives Holy Communion must it be in a special Eucharistic Celebration or a normal Sunday Eucharistic Celebration?
‘eg I attend in the morning sunday eucharistic celebration and I suddenly decides that I’ll attend the evening eucharistic celebration’

Can 917 which you quoted answers your question.

You can receive twice provided the second time is at Mass. In case of danger of death you can receive a third time.

My understanding is it is not a question of how many times but rather an exception allowed for unique events as weddings and funeral. Thus you can receive at the special event(s) and mass also. However the communion service probably would not qualify.

It IS how many times.

You can receive twice in one midnight to midnight period. Three times if in danger of death.

The first time you can receive under any circumstance: at Mass, at a Communion service, at the bedside of someone at the hospital (as I did when Dad was sick and being given Communion), etc.

The second time can only be at a Mass in which you have participated – no coming in at the last minute just to receive Communion.

Now you can go to two Masses back to back and receive at both Masses. They need not be different ‘types’ of Mass (i.e. Weekday Mass & then Wedding Mass or Funeral Mass). You can go to the 8 a.m. Sunday Mass, receive and stay for the 9:30 a.m. Mass and receive again, it doesn’t matter as long as it’s at Mass.

The English wording of the canon is cause for a lot of people to post that very question on these forums. Many misunderstand the words “Eucharistic celebration:” That’s just the “canonical” way of saying the word “Mass.”

If you receive at one Mass that day, you can also receive at another Mass that day, so long as you actually participate in that second Mass. As Phemie said, you can’t just come to that second Mass towards the end and receive. There might be any number of good reasons to “happen” to be in the Church during Communion of that 2nd Mass, but unless you have been there for the whole Mass, you can’t receive the 2nd time.

It also means that one cannot receive twice in one day if the second time is not a Mass (regardless of what the reason for receiving the 1st time). Let’s say you’re caring for an ill relative and the priest brings Communion. You might be able to also receive Communion, but only if you haven’t been to Mass yourself that day. On the other hand if Mass is after the Communion visit (and you did receive) then you can receive at Mass later in the day.

It doesn’t matter what day of the week it might be. The canon is the same for Sundays and any other days.

To use your original example, if you go to 2 Masses on a Sunday, one morning one evening, and you actually participate in the 2nd Mass, then yes, you can receive Communion a second time.

It can get a little confusing.

In danger of death, one may receive at any time (that’s canon 921)
