Receiving in the hand at the Altar rail?

Christmas midnight mass I observed this practice which I had never before seen. I couldn’t figure out why people were kneeling at the rail then receiving in the hand. Has anyone seen this done? Is it ok?:confused:
 
OF, yes and yes. (That is, I’ve seen it done and it’s ok.) My parish uses the altar rail at all Masses (and thus my utter confusion as to how it is “time saving” [letting aside the whole question as to why this is a thing to be sought] to just have everybody walk and walk). Everyone kneels unless physically prevented, and some people prefer to receive in the hand.

But as my altarboy sons would say … please, if your intent is to receive in the hand, put your hands out before they get the paten under your chin, as it’s rather awkward to either change position of the paten or risk your hands banging into the paten as they were aiming for the under-the-chin spot.

EF, OTOH, receiving in the hand isn’t an allowed option.

In the OF there is nothing that says you must receive COTT when you kneel. You can kneel and receive CITH.

Only if you’re properly disposed. But it is awkward to say the least.

I do hear this is the custom in some Lutheran churches, though.
 
So many of the old churches have had the altar railing removed. I can see how people would be confused if they weren’t regulars in the parish. My parish doesn’t have an altar railing. I’d love to kneel down to receive, but I’d have a hard time getting back up.
 
At the OF parish that I attend, anyway that you can get there is OK. However, at my EF parish, its on the tongue only. Physical impairments, excepted. AND hands under the Communion rail cloth.
