Receiving on the tongue for my first time

Gotta be quick here - normally I only stick to family/parenting, but this is a specific ?

My DH normally holds our 15 month old DD when we go up for Communion. He receives on the tongue, and I know he holds her arm so she doesn’t reach out. I am a convert (Easter 2007), and have felt nervous (though would like the feeling of reverence in receving on the tongue) to do the same. I always receive on the hand.

DH’s away and we’re on our own for Mass tomorrow. Eeeek. Maybe I’ll be near a friend who can keep DD in the pew while I go up, but I’d like to be prepared to receive on the tongue as odds aren’t high for that. DD wouldn’t stay w/ me if she was free to walk; I’m just nervous.

Sorry if this is silly - what tips should I keep in mind?! I think I just should open my mouth wide and stick my tongue down/out, right? I have a huge fear of the Host falling off my tongue - it’s terrible! I’m a nervous person in general, this is probably all playing together to take away from a worshipful Mass. I’ll try to not let it be that way. But thanks for any practical tips/easing my mind!
 
You will be fine!

Priests are used to parents with their hands full. 🙂

The host sticks to your tongue–it would be hard to unstick it, so don’t worry about it falling.

yeah, basically kind of open up and say ahh…men 😃 don’t like try to touch your chin with your tongue but do stick it out far enough(and open your mouth wide enough) so the priest doesn’t have to toss it in. And unless you are taller than the priest by a significant amount, you can tilt your head back slightly, so that your tongue is more flat and less likely to fall.

But trust me, as an altar server holding a paten as communion is distributed on the tongue, the priest will find a way, no matter what you do.😛
 
Thanks! It went fine; I was a little self-conscious but there are plenty of people at our parish who receive on the tongue. It was more just the unfamiliarity of Communion that way. Jesus helped me. Thanks again! 🙂
 
Hi, Annie, I’m an Easter 2007 convert myself. Last Sunday I received on the tongue for the first time also. I always received in the hand because I was afraid the host would fall out of my mouth.

Now I have a broken arm so with one hand out of commission, I decided to give it a whirl.

I read recently that the communion wafers are specially made so they stick to your tongue. Boy was that true! My pastor, knowing of my lack of experience, put it so far back that I walked back to the pew looking like a kid who had too much peanut butter!

I love this Church- there’s always something new to learn.

Well, I don’t know that anything special is done to make them stickier, I think it’s just one of those properties of flour-water, no yeast…in other words, it’s an accident 😉

I’m glad it went well for both who received on the tongue for the first time.

Coincidentally, today at Mass I noticed one young man who received in the hand dropped the host but quickly picked it up and consumed it.

So there ya go! 😛
 
Congrats. I have thought about receiving on the tongue but haven’t made the notion yet. Hearing of your wanting to do so and doing so, I might give it a try myself

Simply keep in mind the awesomeness of what you are about to do.

No doubt Christ appreciates being received on your tongue, rather than your hands (if possible). It’s a wonderful and humble act of piety.

After you have done it a few times it’ll be easy.

Here’s a suggestion for you that I read in HPR Magazine awhile back. Invite Mary into your heart to receive her Son Jesus with you.
After all, she is the most perfect tabernacle:love: :gopray2:
