I know we are not supposed to receive communion from Protestant churches, but what about Orthodox? We are in communion with them, but do they consider themselves in communion with us? And does this affect our receiving communion from them?

We are not allowed to take communion at an Orthodox Church because they will not allow it. Even though Catholics allow Orthodox to receive communion, the Orthodox Church will not let us take communion because we are not in full communion with them.

Um, actually we’re not in communion with the Orthodox Churches, even though they’re fully awesome.

The Catholic rule is that an Orthodox Christian may take communion only under special circumstances, one of those being that there is no available Orthodox church.

Unfortunately Orthodox Churches do not reciprocate. Specifically, anyway, the Orthodox Church in America does not allow Catholics to take communion. I have never heard of any other Orthodox body reciprocating the Catholic rule.

Actually you’ve got it the wrong way round. The Orthodox Church is not in union with the Catholic Church. They reject the authority of the Pope. They are in schism.

I know that. I was trying to show it in an Orthodox view. In their eyes, they believe we are shismatics and we are not in full communion with them.

Be nice. The Roman Church changed its definition of “primacy” without informing the Eastern Patriarchs. It was a 1:3 split. The one left the three. Shame on the one, not on the three, for changing the dictionary. The three then and now and in every year in between have always affirmed the primacy of Rome under the original definiton of “primacy.”

The Catholic Church and the Orthodox Churches are not in communion. While the Catholic Church recognizes the validity of Orthodox Sacraments, this is not reciprocated (generally speaking), and Orthodox clergy would not permit a Catholic to receive the Sacraments from them (under all but the most dire and rare of circumstances).
