Had a discussion this morning. I know if you have a particular health problems, as in wheat, etc. one can receive the Precious Blood only. Setting aside any health problems, would it be proper and/or legal for a person with no health problems to receive the Precious Blood only at Communion.
I have never seen or heard of it being done, and I don’t know why someone would, setting aside health, but just wondering.

Wasn’t it Fulton Sheen who said you can’t have a body without blood and you can’t have blood without a body??? Therefore the Precious Body is in the Precious Blood and vice versa.
( I think it was Fulton Sheen who said something along those lines??)

A few years ago I remember reading in the newspaper about a woman who had a violent allergy to wheat and could not eat the host. She approached the local bishop about receiving the precious blood only, and he said “no.” Makes no sense to me.

No there is no prohibition to receiving only one form, either form.

She did not need the bishiops or pastors permission.

Well in my parish nobody would recieve anything as its Body only, no choice. Other than to recieve it or nothing.

We have several parishioners who receive from the cup only. The Bod and Blood is present in the consecrated wine just as in the consecrated host.

She wilol need a special chalice to ensure that there is no contamination by wheat. The priest’s chalice has a portion a host added to it. Any other chalice may pick up a fragment from those who receive from it. If her allergy is severe, she needs a well cleaned chalice that is reserved to her use only.

The OP does not indicate any special allergy, just personal preference.

If a person does require a wheat free chalice or low alcohol Chalice that needs to be arranged with the pastor well before hand, as the Bishops permission may be needed in that case.

No one needs anyones permission to walk over and receive from the chalice only. Prior arrangements may need to be made if someone needs to insure a wheat free chalice or some other special arrangement.

This problem puzzles me. Receiving the Precious Blood because one is allergic to wheat/gluten is contrary to the beliefs we hold that the consecrated host is the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is no longer wheat; it is the flesh of Jesus. However, believing that there is still wheat present probably precludes that one shouldn’t receive the Host or the Precious Blood because of the lack of belief that it is truly the Body and Blood of Christ.
I have a severe allergy to wine (grape) but I always receive the Precious Blood and I do not ‘react’ to it. I am not allergic to Christ.

I believe you need to study up on transubstatiation…the physical characteristics of the substance not change…therefore the

A allergen containing communion wafer does not change in physical properties…which means the allergic effects are still there.

I believe in the real presence and I had to finish off a very large chalice of the precious blood…My wife had to drive home…I was rendered thre sheets to the wind from consuming the large amount…at the time I was giddy and said I was drunk on Jesus
