What is the Lanciano miracle?
Physician Tells of Eucharistic Miracle of Lanciano

ROME, MAY 5, 2005 (Zenit.org).- Dr. Edoardo Linoli says he held real cardiac tissue in his hands, when some years ago he analyzed the relics of the Eucharistic miracle of Lanciano, Italy.

The phenomenon dates back to the eighth century. A Basilian monk, who had doubts about the real presence of Christ in the sacred species, was offering Mass, in a church dedicated to St. Legontian in the town of Lanciano.

When he pronounced the words of the consecration, the host was miraculously changed into physical flesh and the wine into physical blood.

Later the blood coagulated and the flesh remained the same. These relics were kept in the cathedral.

Linoli, a professor of anatomy and pathological histology, and of chemistry and clinical microscopy, and former head of the Laboratory of Pathological Anatomy at the Hospital of Arezzo, is the only doctor who has analyzed the relics of the miracle of Lanciano. His findings have stirred interest in the scientific world.

At the initiative of Archbishop Pacifico Perantoni of Lanciano, and of the provincial minister of the Franciscan Conventuals of Abruzzo, and with authorization from Rome, in November 1970 the Franciscans of Lanciano decided to have the relics examined scientifically.

Linoli was entrusted with the study. He was assisted by Dr. Ruggero Bertelli, retired professor of human anatomy at the University of Siena.

Linoli extracted parts of the relics with great care and then analyzed the remains of “miraculous flesh and blood.” He presented his findings on March 4, 1971.

His study confirmed that the flesh and blood were of human origin. The flesh was unequivocally cardiac tissue, and the blood was of type AB.

**Consulted by ZENIT, Linoli explained that “as regards the flesh, I had in my hand the endocardium. Therefore, there is no doubt at all that it is cardiac tissue.”
**

**In regard to the blood, the scientist emphasized that “the blood group is the same as that of the man of the holy Shroud of Turin, and it is particular because it has the characteristics of a man who was born and lived in the Middle East regions.”
**

"The AB blood group of the inhabitants of the area in fact has a percentage that extends from 0.5% to 1%, while in Palestine and the regions of the Middle East it is 14-15%," Linoli said.

Linoli’s analysis revealed no traces of preservatives in the elements, meaning that the blood could not have been extracted from a corpse, because it would have been rapidly altered.

Linoli’s report was published in “Quaderni Sclavo di Diagnostica Clinica e di Laboratori” in 1971.

I**n 1973, the Higher Council of the World Health Organization (WHO) appointed a scientific commission to verify the Italian doctor’s conclusions. The work was carried out over 15 months with a total of 500 examinations. The conclusions of all the researches confirmed what had been stated and published in Italy.
**

The extract of the scientific research of WHO’s medical commission was published in New York and Geneva in 1976, confirming science’s inability to explain the phenomenon.

p.s. There are a lot more eucharistic miracles (of the Catholic Church) you can read about on the Internet if you are interested.

josie L, thanks for the very nice long informative post. I couldn’t get into all the details since I didn’t want to distort the facts.

Would you know the place in Japan or Korea where a female parishioner took holy communion and the host bled on her tongue?

It was Korea I believe but I can’t remember her name (it should be easy enough to find though, key in Korea and eucharistic miracles on Google). I know she is also on You Tube.

That is speculation, not revelation. All Jesus revealed to us is that the consecrated bread is His Body (and by that He might have simply meant flesh) and that the consecrated wine is His Blood. Further, even if you are right in what you say, Jesus still commanded us to partake of the consecrated wine as well.
Does the Orthodox Church absolutely believe that the consecrated bread and wine turn into the real body and blood of Christ?

Thanks again josie L. I guess these “revelations” will happen when there are too many doubting RCs.

I have never encountered a member of the EOC, OOC, or ACE who denied such.

The answer is unequivocally yes.

Now with the flu at hand, the church doesn’t do the wine as much. Or, when they do the wine/Blood, people kind of bypass it. I feel very uncomfortable doing this because it is faith that will keep me from getting sick. How can you snub Christ in the Chalice?

Your church has been fine with it for quite a while.

Saw the clips from Youtube of Julia Kim and the Eucharistic Miracle in Naju youtube.com/watch?v=cAHvdJX1GIg. With all the media coverage, sad to say, it looked like a circus show.

I can say that my 8 year old son experienced a miracle in him. He had his first communion last May. Three weeks ago he told me after mass, “Pop, why is it that every time I receive communion I feel that I’m growing?” I told him that he receives the living bread, the body and blood of Jesus Christ. He’s letting Jesus grow in him. Someday, people will see Jesus through him.

Your son is a saint in the making raffo (thank you for sharing that). God bless.

p.s. I don’t agree with the media hype either.

Jesus is God, whole and entire.

God is One. God cannot be separated. Both and either Species are God, whole and entire.

Every tiny crumb of the Host and minute drop of Blood are God, Whole and Entire.

This is part of the great Mystery of the Eucharist.

The priest does not get ‘more Jesus’ than anyone else, simply because he may consume a larger piece of the Host, or have bigger sip of the Blood, or if he is the only one to receive the Blood.

God is One.

In the gospel accounts, Jesus took the bread, and said this is my Body.

He took the cup, and said This is my Blood.

Why do catholics then say that the Eucharist under the form of the Host only say the Host contains the Body Blood Soul and Divinity of Jesus.

Why not receive under both species as ordained by Christ?

I know you cant receive the body, without also receiving the Blood as the Blood is part of the Body - as an idea - But Jesus took Bread and wine and performed two seperate acts.

Did those in the early church always receive under both species?

When did it change for the catholic church,

I know some, a lot, of churchs offer both, but not all, and you certainly dont receive the Blood from the Chalice in the traditional rite of the catholic mass.
In the small mass, the body and blood were offered. In fact in the All Saints Catholic Newman Center in Tempe, Arizona, during the feast of feet washing they did have a true unleavened bread (not the host), and offered with the wine too. I don’t know about today.

How can you snub Christ in the Chalice?
How would you be ‘‘snubbing’’ Christ in the Chalice when the catholic church teachs the body blood soul and divinity of Christ is contained fully in both the bread and the wine when transubstansiation occurs.

Why would someone who is a catholic even use such a term?

And the catholic church also teachs there is no requirement to recieve under both species.

How is Christ being ‘‘snubbed’’ then if someone does not receive both?

Ive been to a few catholic masses celebrated in Latin.

Communicants do not get the option to receive the Precious Blood from the Chalice.

Are they too ‘‘snubbing’’ Christ?
