Can anyone explain to me why is it that Catholics are only allowed to receive communion once a day?

If I recall correctly you may receive the Eucharist twice in one day. The stipulation being that you are attending Mass twice.

I too believe that you can receive twice daily. I believe that you must attend the full Mass the second time you receive.

Twice in a day; the second reception must be at a Mass.

Multiple receptions can effectively act within an individual to reduce the importance of the sacrament - that is, it can lead to an almost casual approach.

I was told by a priest that if you happened to attend a daily mass, a nuptial mass and a requiem mass all in one day, you could receive up to to three times. The likelihood of that happening is very slim but the reason being is that it’s three different types of masses so it would be permissible.

There are other threads on this issue; and they state the rule itself. Twice, and the second time has to be at a Mass.

Not three.

I looked farther into this question and found the following:

"One of the significant changes for the faithful in the Code of Canon Law which was promulgated in 1983 was the permission to receive Holy Communion more than once per day. In the past the law set certain conditions, such as participation in a funeral, marriage or ordination Mass. The new canon, however, simply states,

c.917 A person who has received the Most Holy Eucharist may receive it again (iterum) on the same day only during the celebration of the Eucharist in which the person participates, with due regard for the prescription of can. 921, part 2.
What it is saying is that if one attends a Mass after receiving Holy Communion previously that day, one may receive it again. If it is not a Mass, but a Communion Service for example, one may not receive again."

Hope this helps.

Years ago, under the older law, a relative, who was a religious, came to a family reunion mass. She had already received once that day so asked the priest if she could receive again. He told her that the law was one could only receive a second time on an important occasion. He then added that anytime one could get a Catholic into mass twice in one day was an important occasion. 😃

Unless there was a danger of death then the Eucharist may be received during the last rites.

For once, I have to agree with you.
