Our daughter serves at 9:00 mass in the morning and after that we are driving straight to the cathedral to see a family friends confirmation. Can we receive the Eucharist twice in one day. I thought it was only possible if one of the masses was a wedding or funeral mass.

You can receive the Eucharist twice in the same day only during the celebration of the Eucharist in which the person participates.

Participates as in going to mass or does one have to serve in some capacity? Sorry for my ignorance on the topic.

Therefore, in ordinary circumstances, an individual is obligated to participate fully in the entire Mass making an offering of oneself to the Lord. The person ought to be present from the very beginning until the very end of the Mass, giving full attention as best one can. Such full participation and attention dispose the individual to receive Holy Communion. Worthy reception of Holy Communion not only enables the individual to enter into communion with the Lord, but also binds that individual in a communion of faith and love with the other members of the Church.

A lay person cannot receive the Holy Eucharist twice in one day.

Yes. the second time must be at a mass (unless it’s Viaticum).

Can. 917 A person who has already received the Most Holy Eucharist can receive it a second time on the same day only within the eucharistic celebration in which the person participates, without prejudice to the prescript of ⇒ can. 921, §2.

No. There is no such stipulation.

Bridget, this is inaccurate. See:

Does this quote mean that you can attend Mass twice in one day and receive the Holy Eucharist at both Masses?
If that’s what this is saying, then it’s wrong.

Why do you say it is wrong?

Oh, okay, I was thinking it was saying you can receive the Eucharist twice a day any day, but now I remember you can receive the Holy Eucharist twice on Christmas. That’s what it must be saying.

Full Question
I’m confused. I was always taught you could receive Communion only once a day. My pastor says this isn’t correct. He says you can receive the Eucharist twice a day.

Answer
Your pastor is correct. Canon Law says a person may receive Holy Communion a second time, provided he does so during a celebration of the Eucharist in which he participates (canon 917). The stipulation that one receive the second Communion at a Mass “in which he participates” doesn’t apply in the case of those in danger of death (canon 921).

The confusion about this subject is due to post-conciliar changes in Church practice regarding the Eucharist. In the old 1917 Code of Cannon Law, reception of Holy Communion more than once a day was prohibited. After Vatican II this restriction was mitigated to permit reception twice on the same day. The 1983 revised Code of Canon Law incorporated the post-conciliar change in practice into the law of the Church.

I’ve always been taught, and follow the 1917 Code of Canon Law, not the 1983 Pope John Paul one.
You can receive the Eucharist twice a day on Christmas, and if the 1st time is at Mass, and the 2nd for Viaticum.
I’ve never heard of this idea that you can receive It twice a day at two Masses for whatever reason until this thread.
Sorry for the confusion.

Yes, you can receive twice, as long as the 2nd time is during a mass.

No, it’s saying you can receive twice in any day as long as you’re there for the whole Mass.

Nowhere does it say “this only applies to Christmas”. Current canon law still applies even if you personally choose not to follow it, and that’s fine - but that’s not necessarily what’s accurate under current canon law.

I think part of the reason for this was to allow lay ministers (like the organist or cantor) to serve two masses and receive communion at both without potentially causing suspicion regarding why someone serving at mass wasn’t receiving.

However, I do know of a city parish that has 7 Masses on Ash Wednesday, and I heard one retired lay person who was helping with the Ashes say she received communion 7 times that day. That would be an example of an abuse.
