Receiving the Eucharist twice in the same day

Can I receive the Ecuharist at two different masses on the same day or a Sat. & and a Sunday. I’ve referred to the Catechism of the Catholic Church 1388 and Cannon Law 917 and I am still confused. Three different priests said “No BUT…” :confused: :confused: :confused: :confused:

Yes you can as long as the one is recieved within the Mass.

At least that is the way it has been told me to.
 
Our second graders are taught that they can receive Communion more than once a day only if they attend a Mass for a ‘different reasons’ (regular morning Mass followed by a funeral Mass later in the morning). Attending Mass twice on Sunday, for example just because you love the Mass would not constitute a ‘different reason’. This made no sense to me, but it’s what they are taught.
 
I assume that if one attends daily Mass on Saturday morning, and then the vigil Mass on Saturday night to fulfill a Sunday obligation, this is appropriate.

But can I use an example from my own life?

When I was in high school, I was heavily involved in the music ministry, and I became a cantor. There were some weekends, especially in the summer and around major holidays where I served at both Masses on Sunday (plus the Saturday vigil).

I recieved communion each time. Was that proper?

I’m sure there are many people in a similar position, maybe fulfilling different roles at the Mass…lector, usher…etc. Should people refrain from receiving at more than one Mass? Or does the needed service constitute a “different reason”?

I can honestly say that I was really not that holy (although my faith saved my life very literally, I didn’t understand the Mass one bit as a teen), and I would not have attended all those Masses had it not been for the service I provided to my parish.

As Deacon Ed kindly pointed out, there is no basis for that added restriction in Canon Law.

A somewhat common scenario is altar boys or other ministers that serve at 2 masses (not uncommon during the summer months when families are on vacation)

The Altar boys are certainly welcome and entitled to recieve the Eucharist while serving their second Mass of the day.

Lest someone misinterpret, I think one may receive Viaticum even if one has already recieved twice that day.
 
Just to take this a little farther… It has always seemed odd that many, if not most, receive communion under BOTH species… since Christ is wholly present, Body-Blood-Soul & Divinity, in each specie isn’t receiving both the precious body AND blood the same as receiving communion twice at the same mass?
