I posted this on the back fence but thought I would try here instead - forgive me! : I normally take my kids to the Ash Wednesday Mass before school, and we wear our ashes proudly and explain them patiently. One daughter is in the choir and is performing in a trio during the Evening Mass, and also my son is altar serving during the same Mass. Is there a problem receiving thbe Eucharist twice? I was told that if you are in service to the parish it is certainly OK. What do you think? IHSCV †

No it is fine to receive Communion twice in a day but it must be received during Mass.

The ashes are not something to show off. I’m not sure that is the right reason for going to Mass in the morning and when your kids have to sing in the evening.

There is nothing wrong with getting the ashes in the morning to wear them throughout the day. I do the same thing. I told the Priest I’d be wearing them to work and he gave me a real nice and big cross.

Actually this is a great way to evangelize just as the OP does by explaining the ashes to people who wonder what it is and ask. Some people remember it from their past and start thinking about the Faith again.
I’ve had a couple of good conversations at work myself.

Especially today we have to stand up for our Faith and must not be ashamed of it. So why not wear the ashes all day and spread the Faith?

And receiving twice in one day is fine as long as for the second time one attends the whole Mass.

Actually, the last time I looked you needed a dispensation from the local Ordinary (Bishop) in order to receive Eucharist twice in one day.
The problem as I see it is the separation in time between Masses. If the second Mass is a Vigil Mass (that of the next day), you probably don’t need the dispensation. However, as you phrased it, it appears to be two Masses of the same day, so don’t receive at the second celebration.

There’s no dispensation required. A Catholic may receive twice in one day, as long as the second time is in Mass, and with a substantially different group than the first one. Receiving more than twice in one day is forbidden.

The last time you looked must have been before 1983 when the new Code of Canon Law was promulgated. A person may receive twice in one day, provided the second time is at Mass.

Thanks to everyone’s kind replies. We did the 8am and the 7pm Masses. My son served well, my daughter sang well, & my youngest - in 1st Communion classes now - still is reaching for the host. All-in-all, a fullfilling day, and a beautiful Liturgy - matched by Father’s beautiful, and approving smile.😃

God bless you all!

Now, I’ve been told (correctly or not) that priests may receive three times a day if their mass times so dictate. Is this correct?

hee hee…yay for complicated canon law!!
That is correct. I don’t know if there is a formal limit on the number of times a priest may receive communion in a day, but logically speaking, the second and later times must be at Mass. The fun part begins when we learn that a priest may only collect one stipend per day. When a priest says Mass, he receives i think $6 from the collection plate, but he is only allowed to do this once per day. I’m not sure if this applies on Easter and Christmas, where the priest must celebrate several Masses for his congregation…

Don’t forget that we can always receive a 3rd time in danger of death, and that the second time doesn’t necessarily need to be in mass if there is danger of death 🙂

I think we all need degrees in canon law to keep all of this straight!

How is the average lay person to know all of this stuff???

As far as what the lay people are supposed to know, the priests and bishops should instruct them better.

And perhaps we all need to relax and ease up a little.

As an EMHC, I look forward to the days when I have some of the Blood of Christ left in my chalice after communion so I can receive one or two more sips of His precious blood myself. 😃

Priests may receive Holy Communion three times but only on Sundays - and I guess also Holy Days of Obligation because those days require them to offer more Masses than on weekdays.
