My friend, the question is not “would Jesus really care if I receive on tha hand or on the tongue?” just as it is not “would Jesus really care if I went to Mass wearing overalls and a t-shirt or the clothes of a king?”
The question is what does the Church Jesus founded teach about the proper way to receive communion? You are, because of this teaching, more than welcome to receive on the tongue. What you are not welcome to do is imply that this is the only way it should be done and denigrate those who disagree with you.

Of the issues facing the Church today whether one recieves communion in the hand or on the tongue must rank about dead last

I will have to admit that I am not enough of a thologian to figure out how I should do many things. I depend on my Church for guidance. My Church says it is proper for me to either recieve communion on the tongue or in the hand. For the life of me i can not understand why there is any dispute.

I have not, BTW, ever grabbed the host or ever seen anyone do so. If one dos that it is a liturgical abuse(we are not allowed to self commionicate) and they should be instructed on the proper way to recieve.
Like I said, the GIRM is not infallible. And, yes, the Church’s law says that the licit way to receive Communion is on the tongue… the only time it is done otherwise is when and indult is granted to practice something that opposes the law of the Church, which receiving on the hand does. The Church does NOT say i is proper to receive on the hand, they just that it can be done… I have not read anything saying that.

So you are contening that the Church has knowingly approved an improper way of receiving the Body of Christ!!! I am not sure I could put much trust in an organization that would willingly lead millions of people astray in this . Fortunately, although the GIRM may not be infallibe, you most certainly are not either. I will continue to look to my church for guidance on this issue.

then you do not fully understand my stance… to do that, you would have to read every single post that I have made on this discussion.

I want to protect the Eucharist… each particle that is split from the Host is Jesus Christ, and little particles sometimes fall off the Host when the Host is in the hand, then the person picks up the host with their opposite hand and places Jesus in their mouth. Then, they usually move the hand that first received Jesusin away that anything that was on the hand falls off the hand… inculding htose tiny particles. I do not want that to occur. Also, if we see someone receive on the tongue and not with the hand, then it is harder for them to steal the host as a satanist who wants to perform a black mass… they cannot slip the host into their sleeve from the palm of their hand because the altar server would notice if they tried to take the Host by the hand… and when we receive on the tongue, you can tell if someone takes the host out of their mouth during Mass… to preserve it for desecration. and, if they wait until after Mass, then at least some of the pieces of the Host will have had to be consumed and perhaps it would be less likely for them to get each piece of the host off their tongue or whatever.

Also, it is about what is truly going on with the grace and whatnot as I have explained earlier.

Pax Domini tecum. :highprayer:

Who here can object to protecting the Sacred Body of Our Lord? Who here can object to showing externally what is going on enternally with grace in Holy Communion?

I would hope no one.

God love you.

Again, I dont THINK you understood what I mean… read my reply to tweetymom.
I may not have understood what you meant…but the words you chose to use were indeed harsh and insulting. And in the post to which you refer me, you again talk about grabbing.
when you receive on the hand, you take the Lord into your own hands and choose whether to place Him in your mouth, on the ground, put Him in your pocket to receive when you feel like it, etc.
WHAT? I can’t comment about what happens where you are, but in both the churches I attend (in two different countries), we receive the Lord in our hands, step to one side and immediately place Him in our mouth. Should anyone do otherwise they would be reprimanded right there and then; at the smaller church the priests administer communion and they watch what yo do; at the huge one we have all 3 priests and 7 EMHC, (no chalice is offered here) each with a patten-holding assistant, both of whom check that no abuse takes place.

Oh how wonderful it would be if everyone could see the wisdom of this and allow each person to do what is most respectful for them without feeling the need to make everyone show respect in that same way.

When did the Church assign you the job of protecting the Eucharist. And who are you protecting the Eucharist from?

Ja…I’ve seen this argument given as the reason why communion on the tongue is “better” - it is very simple to check for and resectfuly handle any particles that may remain on your hand.

If you really look to your Church re which is the proper way to receive the Holy Eucharist, you’ll receive on the tongue. That is the universal law of the Church.

If you won’t adopt the position of supplication & adoration, you can probably look to your Bishop & you’ll get the answer you seem to want.

I attend the latin Mass so it’s not a problem with me, now. However, the parish I used to belong to, would NOT give the Eucharist to people who were kneeling. The priests just looks past that person & motions to the next person to come forward. This happens in most Missouri parishes. My first Sunday, after we moved into the above parish…I was SO thankful that I saw the priest do that, BEFORE my turn came…I would have been so embarrassed for I would have knelt by habit. We left that parish after we settled into this city. It took about 6 months before we said, “There’s got to be something better”. We found a more traditional parish that (miracle of miracles) had NOT had the old Communion Rail hauled out on the first moving truck back in the late 60’s. Now our parish offers the TLM. every Sunday. :clapping:

So Church is wrong to allow us to receive communion in the hand? If so what else are they wrong about? The Ressurection? The Real presence?

I think the rule is:
  1. You can’t be denied COTT;
  2. You can be denied CITH if the local bishop has disallowed it;
I don’t know …
3. … If you can go to a TLM, in a diocese in which CITH is allowed, then go up for Communion and stick your hand out.
Allowed or not, it would be a …peculiar … thing to do.

COTT is the norm in the Church. If sections of the Church can make mistakes about things like the Arian heresy and Jansenism, CITH may be legitimately criticised, especially as it’s a discipline and not a dogma, as those who argue for it often point out.

So you think that CITH is on par with Arianism & Jansenism?

I receive CITH 6 times a week. Am I to assume that you believe I am showing a l;ack of reverance when doing so?

I the GIRM will be changed probably by 2011 as far as translations go…
No, ,that’s the ROman Missal translation that is in the works. There are no pending changes to the GIRM that have been made public.
the GIRM is not infallible, it is merely a Discipline that can be changed as the Church sees it suitable.
Of course it’s not infallible. Has anyone in this thread claimed otherwise? But it is more than a discipline, unless you understand “discipline” to include “liturgical law.” Of course disciplines and most legislation can be changed.

What is your point by saying it’s not infallible, anyway?

COTT is the norm in the Church…
Just an fyi, In the U.S. Church, the approved norm for the Ordinary Form is either on the tongue or in the hand. Not one or the other, it’s entirely left to the communicant. Personal preferences are fine of course, but just that: personal preferences. There is no other norm that binds the U.S. Church other than the one the Vatican approved.

Arianism and Jansenism are heresies. CITH is a discipline. So far, no one has given me a credible reason for introducing it into a Roman Catholic diocese where COTT, kneeling, from a priest, was the norm.

That “other rites do it” is not a reason. Even my own mother told me that just because someone else does something is no reason for you to do it.

That “it’s allowed” is not a reason. It’s allowed because …?

“Reverence is internal” is not a reason, as by that logic you could dump most of the externals in the rite [Thinks: hmmm, is that the ulimate desire of our more puritan brethern; a minimalist rite in a bare room, or perhaps a Charismatic bedlam, where personal expression trumps ancient ritual?]

You are missing an opportunity to humble yourself, publicly, in the sight of God and man, before the Real Presence: “Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldst enter under my roof …” etc. Neither I nor anyone else knows how internally reverent you are. That’s the idea of a public rite; to show it. And maybe reduce your own, internal, pride as a result.

A simple question:
**
Before:**On the tongue, kneeling, from your priest, at an altar rail separating the holy ground from the rest of the Church.
After: From a laywoman, standing, into your hand.

Now, how is that an improvement, given that it’s the Body of Christ we’re handling?

Why would anyone have to give you a reason for introducing COTT?

It seems that you relate the discipline of receiving the Eucharist in your hand to the dogma concerning the Ressurection & the Real Presence. ODD, indeed.

That “other rites do it” is not a reason. Even my own mother told me that just because someone else does something is no reason for you to do it.
True, but that other rites do it show that it is not irreverent, or are you saying that they are?
That “it’s allowed” is not a reason. It’s allowed because …?
Actually “it’s allowed” is good enough. The Church has determined that it is CITH is allowable, there is no need for us to determine why it is allowed as the Church allows it where the bishop has decided to allow for it.

It is a legitimate choice of the laity and there is nothing less reverent about it.

For me, when deciding how I would receive I toke Christ’s words to heart, “Take it; this is my body” (Mark 14:22). He did not say that we are to be fed the Eucharist, he said take it. I also look to how I would receive the Cup. I actually take the Chalice and drink from it, it is not held and fed to me, so why must the Body be that way?
