I’ve been going to church, praying and fasting on Lent season on and off for many years. I’ve committed so many sins, which some I had no idea they were a sin. yes, I lost my sense of sin for along time. But two weeks ago I had a dream that changed my life. I’m not sure I should mention it. I prayed and asked God for guidance, and few days later I suddenly started to see EVERYTHING. All the sins that I’ve committed, my unfaithfulness to Jesus whom I love very much. I went the next day and confessed, and told the priest about my dream and sins, his words gave me hope that God has entered my heart and is helping me with this fight. After I finished I did my penance, I still didn’t feel the sense of peace I was supposed to. and for a week I continued to see more and more my past sins, and struggling with old doubts coming back to me, my sins are haunting me. I went and confessed again. This time it helped much more than the first, because mostly I confessed the sins I forgot to mention the first time and they were weighing on me. This was few days ago.

Now I feel better in general. My coming back to church two weeks ago has changed me, I can feel it in my soul. Not only am I staying away from my old sins, but I’m also appalled at them, the sins that used to bring me a false sense of happiness now disgust me literally. I know there is no way I’m going back to them. But now I have a new problem.

Satan has lost his hold on me completely, so now he’s been planting thoughts in my head that comes out of nowhere, some of them are memories of my old sins and some are curses against God and St. Mary. I try very hard to push these away, Hear them sometimes in my head like a song you hate stuck in your head, sometimes they are too short’ only passing. But the worst are the doubts he plants in my head, about the Saints and how they might be just humans and that I shouldn’t pray for them and ask them to pray for me. Like I’m not supposed to pray the rosary, this happens to me while praying the rosary or other prayers. Please know that St. Mary is my Saint and she has helped m before in my life in a very dark time, so I know she is real.

Sometimes I feel satan planting doubts when I read the Gospel, Like when I read how Jesus said beware of others coming in my name, it made me pause and think for a day or so, but then I read how Jesus said beware of fake prophets that come after him, he said we will know them by their fruits. That made me think, of course there are many fake prophets that came after him and I could see how their teachings go against Christ. But our saints follow Jesus’s teachings and help us continue on doing them and remembering them.

You see what is happening to me? There is a battle going inside me, my friend said the Holy Spirit is giving me the strength to fight, and I know the words from the Gospel are my weapon in this fight. I’am grateful for the grace God has given me, this second chance.

My fear is about these thoughts. Are the considered Mortal sins? I did not commit them willingly, they just pop in my head and I keep fighting them. Some of them are blasphemous thoughts, those I fight the hardest, I do not will them nor did I ever entertain them even before coming to church. I get so sacred sometimes, I pray and beg God to take them away, I will not give up but how can I get red of them?

Here is what I’ve been doing for the past two weeks, I’ve been adding new prayers gradually.

Morning Offering, though I haven’t been waking up at the same time every day. I offer myself to God and pray. then read the Gospel for 15 minutes or so.

Praying the rosary. 4 times so far.

examining my conscience every night before bed, then say the Act of contrition and pray.

I haven’t memorized all prayers yet, could this be the reason? I read the I should enter the Seven Daily Habits for Faithful Catholics gradually, not all at once. I don’t want God to be upset with me for these nasty thoughts, I’ve already confessed few days ago, do I need to do it again before I take Communion? Or are these considered venial sins? Please help. 😦

Welcome back!

What an inspiring story, thanks for sharing.

When these thoughts assault you I suggest you say a prayer out loud (if possible). You can just invoke the name of Jesus, or St. Michael, or whatever gives you strength. (I like to pray the Glory Be when I feel stressed or can’t get something off my mind). Make the sign of the cross. Please do not worry about these thoughts being mortal sin, since they are not. You could bring it up in confession and ask the priest for advice. It is important to not hold on to such thoughts. Let them go, don’t entertain them by obsessing over them.

Spiritual attack is real and many who come back to the faith experience it. Don’t be afraid and don’t stop what you are doing.

The reason you are having these thoughts is an attempt to pull you back into your old lifestyle; it could be on the part of you that doesn’t like being out of your comfort zone or it could be tye Devil trying to get you back. Tye Devil can’t get inside of us bit he can influence our imaginations and thus our thoughts.

Reject the thoughts each time they come up. Pray to St Michael and Our Blessed Lady for their help as well as praying to God. Your not yet having memorized the prayers is *not *the reason this is happening–so don’t worry about praying in your own words for help!

Hold firm against these thoughts which float into your mind and should be allowed to float out again, and soon whatever is trying to drag you back into a life of sin will realize this tactic is not working.

Welcome home and welcome to CAF!

Every morning we say the St. Michael Prayer to keep us out of evil, keep our minds focussed on our daily duties, and be alert and ready for our daily opportunities to serve.

Being Catholic isn’t a get out of sin free card, but by grace we become more aware of our sin.

Confession is so great!

Trust God and look forward.

The greatest sinner can be the greatest saint!

God Bless

You’re actually do quite well.

Having doubtful thoughts is not a sin, much less a mortal one.

Faith is when we continue to practice and pray despite our doubts.

Just keep praying and attending Mass. Also, pray to the Blessed Mother of the Word incarnate to hold you close no matter what.

May God bless you and keep you close to Him always.

Pray the Rosary for a while for no other intention than offering
a gift to Mary in it’s praises of her for her to use as she wishes. Plant
your mind thoroughly within her and do not attempt imaginative thought.
Best wishes, relax, you are fine.

Welcome Home and welcome to Catholic Answers!

Whenever I start to have impure thoughts, I give myself the Sign of the Cross and say a Hail Mary aloud. Then, if needed, I will also say an Our Father, Glory Be and Fatima Prayer, sometimes repeating the Hail Mary and Our Father a few times.

Usually, this almost always puts my mind back in a good place and stops it from dwelling on sinful thoughts.

God Bless.

Your story is so similar to part of my life! I’ve fallen away from the Faith and Church twice, and now I’m back to stay. The first time I came back, the devil worked in a similar fashion. I was tempted and had thoughts that made no sense to me…I’d never been tempted to do certain things, or think a certain way, but now the devil was working overtime. It felt like I’d been in the devil’s back pocket this whole time and therefore, he didn’t have to work to get me. I gave myself to the dark side. But now that I had turned to the Light, he was trying in every way to get me back. But let’s remember…God is stronger, God is greater, and will not only fight for us, but protect us. Being tempted is not a sin; acting on it is. The devil has worked on me in different ways this time, and at times it’s been pretty rough, and I’ve failed greatly. But God has helped me to start again.

Ask Mary and St. Michael the Archangel for help. Sometimes, when I feel I’m about to ‘break’, I give in…but I give in to GOD! I tell Him I can’t do this, and ask Him to do it for me (resist temptations). He does! I still do fail, but it’s when I give in to myself, give in to the devil. But I’m getting stronger every day, even when I feel weaker.

One bit of advice I’ve heard is not to dwell on those thoughts. When they come into your mind, distract yourself with prayer. Don’t think hard on the ‘blasphemous’ thoughts. They aren’t from you, or from God.

Don’t constrain yourself to praying only at bedtime, or upon waking. Pray ANY time. That ‘broken record’ of bad thoughts…distract it with a Hail Mary if you it’s too difficult to ‘ad lib’ prayer at that moment. Don’t give more power to these thoughts and temptations.

I’m not sure if this advice is for you, or for me 🤷, but maybe it will help one of us!

Welcome, welcome, welcome to our Home (Catholicism) away from Home (Heaven)!

Thank you everyone for your warm welcome. You have no idea how happy I am to be back. It’s like there was something big missing in my life and I had no idea till I got it back. But these nasty thoughts that come to me out of nowhere are ruining my happiness. I will try to do the things everyone suggested. Your words had encouraged me a lot. I’m happy these thoughts aren’t considered a mortal sin. Though I can’t say they are not my fault. After all I let the satan in in the first place and committed many sins. Pray for me, your sister in faith please, that I will continue this fight and have the strength to completely be free of these thoughts. I know these thoughts are not mine but it hurts when they come to me. Just like how it hurts when someone talks badly about someone you love. I love God, Jesus and St. Mary and hate to hear any bad words against them.

Again, thank you everyone for your support. I’m so glad I found these Forums. 🙂

You do know that a person in the state of grace is pleasing to the Father. As long as you stay in grace, the Father says of you, " this is my son in whom I am pleased." If one were able to see a person in this state with their eyes, they would fall down from the extreme brightness of glory radiating from their soul.

You are a temple of the Holy Spirit as St. Paul says. This is as much of a teaching as that of the Eucharist. Your are a reflection of Jesus Christ, his image.

Think about this often during the day so you know who is living in you and how wonderful the Father looks upon you. This will give you courage and strength to resist and to pray.

Keep this in mind and you have nothing to fear.

May God our Father give you grace and peace.

Thanks for your help. In general am feeling good and so happy that I’ve returned to my faith (which at the time I had no idea that I’ve actually left) 😦

I have a question, is it normal for someone who had no sense of sin to not know the difference between Mortal sin and Venial sin? I’m having a hard time making the difference. Not all of them, but some am not quite sure if I committed willingly or it just happened by mistake. Like sometimes I get distracted while praying, so I repeat it sometimes. I know before I returned I used to say them fast just so I could finish. I didn’t even think of what I was saying. But now I take my time and pray out loud, I still get kinda distracted but not really willingly, it just happens 😦 Will I learn to get better with time? I feel like there is so much to learn, I’ve wasted so much time. And now I think am pushing myself hard to learn faster.
