Hi everyone,

Is it permissible to receive the Eucharist more than once a day? The Priest in my old Parish told us emphatically that it was not, as did a chaplain at my high school but in my new parish, I’ve been told the opposite. What’s the deal??

If it is permissible, what are the Rules for doing so?

Thanks in advance!!

Peace & all good 👍

I do not have all the source material available at my fingertips, but I know that a person may receive communion twice a day, but no more.

I might be wrong, but I think you can revieve communion a 3rd time if you are in danger of death.

There have been many threads on this topic. FTR, the governing Canons are:
Can. 917 A person who has already received the Most Holy Eucharist can receive it a second time on the same day only within the eucharistic celebration in which the person participates, without prejudice to the prescript of ⇒ can. 921, §2.
Can. 921 §1. The Christian faithful who are in danger of death from any cause are to be nourished by holy communion in the form of Viaticum.
§2. Even if they have been nourished by holy communion on the same day, however, those in danger of death are strongly urged to receive communion again.
§3. While the danger of death lasts, it is recommended that holy communion be administered often, but on separate days.
Also FTR, the phrase *eucharistic celebration *in Can 917 means a Mass or Divine Liturgy.

I do not know where the ‘rule’ is but I attended 4 Masses one weekend because the Parish was in need of help. Feast day of our Parish. And my Priest said as long as it is not done with licit intentions and it is a Mass that you are participating in. Usher, EMHC, Server that as many times as needed to help fulfill your obligation is acceptable. But, to go to every Mass on Sunday because you commited a sin on Saturday and thinking the ‘extra’ Holy Communion will bring about forgiveness is ‘licit’.

perhaps, depends on the context. if you’ve never received that day and then you became in danger of death (medical condition or accident) and ended up in a hospital and you’re being given your last rites, there’s no reason to receive more than once, during the last rites

but in the circumstance that you’ve received twice already that day then you get into that danger, then you would receive a third time during your last rites. i guess that would already be an extraordinary circumstance

the normal circumstance is only twice

Why do priests make up their own rules? That was clarified many years ago and the translation was changed to ‘a second time’.

The most anyone may licitly receive Communion in one day is three times: the first time can be under any circumstance; the second must be at a Mass one has attended, and the third time must be as Viaticum.

As for the part I highlighted, I can’t figure out what you mean. Regardless of whether you are a person in the pew, a reader, an altar server or an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion you do not have to receive Communion at Mass. The ONLY person who must receive Communion is the priest.

OK, perhaps also the person who has not fulfilled his Easter obligation and for whom this is the last opportunity.

Thanks everyone for your responses, I really appreciate the help :).

That’s part of what confuses me about what the priest in my old parish had said-If a layperson is able to receive the Eucharist twice (3 times if in danger of death) then I don’t know why he was so adamant that it could only be once  Oh well…
