Is there a proper way to swallow the eucharist? Was there something about letting it dissolve on your tongue, nothing touching it pre-Vatican II? I can’t seem to find anything on this.

The Eucharist is Food for Eternal Life, consume it as you would normal food. Realizing of course that it sustains not your natural life but supernatural life.

Dear friends

I have seen people vigourously chewing the Host after receipt. There honestly is no need for this as once the host is in your mouth it starts to dissolve almost instantly. Sometimes the Host sticks to the roof of your mouth, there is nothing bad or wrong in this and any part of your mouth the host touches is ok. But I can never understand why people find the need to munch on the Host…it always seems a bit irreverent to me. But then that is just my opinion.

After receiving the Eucharist, this is our most intimate moment with Christ and I prefer to treat His Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity gently, worshipping Him and loving Him as He becomes part of me in this Holy Sacrament where He is my everlasting life. Yes we consume Christ and there is no other way to do this but by ‘eating’ Him, but there is a difference that everyone is aware of…this is JESUS we have in our mouth and personally I eat Him in reverance and love, gently, with my thoughts focused on Him.

God Bless you and much love and peace to you

I’ve heard stories of nuns who taught the “no biting” rule in Catholic school, and used their ruler on anyone they caught biting the host. But Br. Rich is completely correct as to the Church’s actual teaching on the matter.

In John’s gospel we find a very earthy word that describes what Jesus says we are to do with His Body – we are to “gnaw” (Greek trogo) His body (John 6:58 “This is the bread that came down from heaven. Unlike your ancestors who ate and still died, whoever eats this bread will live forever.”).

So, let it dissolve or chew it – your choice.

Having you been talking to me? 🙂

I was once taught by a very knowledgeable and holy priest that if you let the Host dissolve completely in your mouth, it no longer retains the appearance of bread, and so Jesus is no longer present. We should swallow it before it loses the appearance of bread - softened up a bit, perhaps, but not dissolved.

What I do is to use my tongue to break the Host in half, as if folded, and then in half again, in quarters, then swallow it. If some of it sticks to the roof of the mouth after that, it’s OK.

Jesus said, My body is real food, and my blood is real drink.
This is what we teach the children in first communion class that they are to take seriously His command to take and eat.

The nuns who taught me did have a ‘no biting’ rule, but it had nothing to do with the Eucharist.

when I was little I used to divide bit of the eucharist up with my tounge, swallow it and pray for someone…when most of it was gone I would finish with one big swallo and the prayer, “and Jesus let me just be happy if the scraps of the earth were to go to me”

I was a wierd little kid…
