Recieving Communion when not sure

I am doing an examination of conscience and my list is too long for Confession so I wanted to know if it is wrong to recieve Communion if you are not sure you have committed a mortal sin.

You need to get guidance from your priest. Spiritual direction is important. If you list is that long, could it be that you tend towards scrupulosity? Also, you say you aren’t “sure” you committed a mortal sin, again talk to your priest about your conscience formation.

I agree with 1ke, you really need to discuss this with a priest.

For the record for something to be “mortal sin”
all 3 of these criteria need to be met-
1.it must be “grave” matter
2. you must know that is is grave matter
3. you must willingly do it anyway.

If ALL 3 of these things are not present, it is not “mortal sin”.

Again, it is best to discuss this with a priest, but generally speaking,
when there is doubt, there is no mortal sin.

I have told him that I am scrupulous and he has told me to remember the three things needed for something to be a mortal sin. The problem is that I just can’t tell with a lot of things. I like to ask him if something is a mortal sin because I do them with the possible knowledge or suspicion that it is, so if he says yes I can confess doing them.

One thing to remember, if your not sure if your in mortal sin, do not receive communion until you go to confession. Also, if you have a long list of sins, make an appointment to do a confession privately.

I have trouble too.
My Priest told me “If you have the slightest doubts, go to communion!” because I miss it very often.

Yet I STILL have trouble obeying to that, I told him I did not obey him, and told me the same thing. Unless I “hold up a convenient store” then I go to confession.

Someday we will know for sure if we may receive Him or not. We just need to persevere until then.

If someone is not sure that something is a mortal sin then they do not fulfill the requriements for a sin to be mortal…that is to KNOW it is a mortal sin.

I agree with the other posters. Mortal sin requires full knowledge and full consent in contradiction to that knowledge.

If you are “uncertain”, then you obviously do not have full knowledge. Full knowledge would lead to absolute certainty. Lacking full knowledge, the requirements of mortal sin are not fulfilled.

If you are struggling with scruples – you need to have a “regular confessor” --and follow his direction (unless of course he tells you to do something manifestly sinful (contrary to the Church) like murder his secretary! (or you can use contraception) --in such occurs one needs to find a new one to say the least).

He can give or confirm principles for you to follow so as to work against your scruples…

(such as he might tell a person with scruples “unless your certain you committed a moral sin – go to communion” to give one example)
