Reciting the Rosary as a family and a Church family

I’m taking a class in family ministry and we were asked to create a vision of family evangelization and catechesis drawing upon the catechetical documents of the Church.
The National and General Directory for Catechesis references The Blessed Virgin/Mother of God and her importance to the Church.
The Rosary is a powerful prayer and since Mary asked us to pray the Rosary; I believe that it could bring families and our Church much closer together if we begin a tradition of reciting it all together in the home and in church by holding a special day, perhaps the first Saturday of the month.

Just remember that the Rosary is a private devotion, and Catholics are not obliged to say it.

I think the idea of a family Rosary is a good one. For one thing, it teaches the kids how to say one! I like that we sometimes say a “public” Rosary. We tend to do one at family wakes. Some of the catechesis might be to teach different ways to approach the Rosary. I tend to do it quietly but meditatively = Mary does bring one to Jesus. the Scriptural Rosary is also good. Rosary beads can also be used as the chaplet of Divine Mercy. or simply prayers of love.

On the other hand, examine the other documents referenced. You may find other ideas for family evangelization there. It is good to have more than “one egg in your basket.”

Those are very good thoughts. The Rosary is a wonderful way to pray as a family. It is easy to learn the Scriptural Rosary (my favorite) and each one who can lead a decade can say the Scripture before each Hail Mary.

I taught my two grandsons, 12 and 9 to say the Scriptural Rosary. Of course, you can do it the other way as well.

In my parish about 8 to 10 people stay afterwards to say the Rosary each weekday. A neighboring parish says a Rosary before each weekday Mass begins. I have a group of women come over every Monday afternoon for a Scriptural Rosary and other prayers, then coffee. This has been going on for 12 years.

Another lady in the neighborhood, who has a large house, has 15 to 20 ladies over for a Scriptural Rosary and other prayers once a month. She has been doing that for about eight years.

Many parishes already have the First Five Saturday devotions every month. There is something about the Rosary that is so blessed and it grows when you are persistent.

I remember the first time I tried it with my small children one of the Rosarys got pulled to pieces!
