Why do the Apostles have such a hard time recognizing Jesus after the resurrection?

Just a personal explanation. I don’t think Jesus came out of the tomb with matted hair, dried blood, crown of thorns, and all that. Jesus was definitely different in appearance. The disciples needed not just ordinary physiological eyesight, they needed faith to see Jesus, as well. But, with faith, they really saw Him.

Just another personal explaination, but I think that our glorified bodies don’t necessarily resemble our earthly physical ones. I also find it interesting that in some of the cases, it isn’t until bread is broken that Christ is recognized, yet another reinforcement of the Real Presence in the Eucharist.

Here’s a quote from a reflection given by a Fr. Vazhakala:
“Subtility”, which is one of the qualities of the glorified body, means that “the body is totally subject to the soul and ever ready to obey its wishes” (St. Pius V), with the result that it can pass through material obstacles without any difficulty.
This would mean that the one’s bodily appearance could be altered if one so willed. Jesus must not have wanted to be immediately recognizeable by the apostles. I wonder why.
