Could someone please recommend me a book to read in defense of the the Papacy.

It depends exactly what you’re looking for.

The Faith of the Early Fathers (3 volumes) (ed. Jurgens) seems to be the official Catholic apologists collection of writings of the Church Fathers. The Doctrinal Index in the back allows you to locate what the Church Fathers said about virtually every major Catholic doctrine. Want to know the quotes of the Church Fathers of the Real Presences of Jesus in the Eucharist, or on the primacy of Peter? It gives you all the references. It’s quite handy as an apologetics tool.

If you’re looking for a more basic intro to the Church Fathers with helpful intros and explanations, a good book would be The Fathers of the Church by Mike Aquilina.

Another good book is The Spirit of Early Christian Thought by Robert Louis Wilken. It’s not so much a collection of writings or an overview of the Fathers as it is an insightful look into the cultural backdrop of some of the key periods of Christian antiquity. Basically, it helps you to understand why some of the Church Fathers wrote what they wrote.

The first book you mentioned looks very good, I am probably going to go to the store and buy it this weekend, I probably will only buy one volume however, because that’s a lot of money. 🤷

Yes, it’s an investment to be sure! Since it goes chronologically, the first volume will give you all the earliest Church Fathers, up through Nicea. That’s usually the apologist’s bread and butter, anyway! 😉

On the subject of the papacy, I came across a forthcoming book from Ignatius Press that looks very interesting. It’s The Early Papacy: To the Synod of Chalcedon in 451 by Adrian Fortescue. Of course, I haven’t read it as it hasn’t been released, but the description looks very promising. It looks like it will be very helpful in explaining how the papacy goes right back to the beginnning!
