Recommend movies on saints?

There was a fantastic Spanish miniseries on the life of Teresa of Avila which was broadcast some years back here in Australia. Unfortunately there’s no DVD or VCR of the subtitled version (at least not for the Australian region).

Another film is one by Leonardo de Filippis - St John of the Cross
 
I do not recommend the St. Therese movie that came out a few years ago, awful acting.
Two I do recommend. St Francis (has Dolores Hart in it). The other one isn’t really about a Saint, though he just one step away from it. Molokai: The Story of Farther Damien. It’s about Bl. Damien (obviously). I love this movie, it movies me to tears each time I watch it.
 
This series on Saint Teresa of Avila is actually available from Ignatius Press in DVD form (on three discs). I watched it myself several weeks ago, after I had my library order it from Ignatius Press. It was very faithful to her life story, and showed many things about her life that I was unaware of, though I am one of her fans. I was especially interested in seeing it because I will be in Avila and some of her other places in April

I found that Ignatius Press is the best source for Catholic movies, including movies on saints, I have ordered all those below for the library at the Catholic university where I work. Just type Ignatius Press on google.com to get to it. Ignatius Press is the largest Catholic publisher in the United States, and perhaps in the world. Here are movies on saints that I have seen and recommend, all available at Ignatius Press. Some of these are also available on Amazon.com.
Code: 
 "Saint Peter." Saint Peter is very well acted by Omar Sharif.
 "St. Teresa of Avila." From a TV series, about 8 hours long.
 "Faustina." On Saint Faustina, the Polish sister who was responsible for the Divine Mercy devotion. This movie is in Polish with English subtitles.
 "Bernadette," On Saint Bernadette. Saint Benadette is very well acted. This movie is shown daily at the shrine at Lourdes. There is a second movie, "The Passion of Bernadette," which I have not seen. This is not to forget the excellent older movie, "The Song of Bernadette."
 "Saint Anthony". On Saint Anthony of Padua. 
 "Padre Pio, Miracle Man." This is the only motion picture of him that I have seen; the other movies were documentaries. 
 "St. John Bosco: Mission to Love."
 "Clare and Francis". This is on Saint Francis and Saint Clare, Some think this the best movie on St. Francis, though there are some other excellent ones. 
 "Mother Teresa." This movie, on Mother Teresa of Calcutta, is the one that her order in India shows to people.
 "Molakai, The Story of Fr. Damien." This is the story of the priest who cared for lepers in Hawaii and became a leper himself. I can include him here with other movies on saints because he will very soon be canonized by Pope Benedict XVI.
 "Monsieur Vincent." This movie is about the French saint, St. Vincent de Paul.
 "Saint Patrick."
 This is not to say there are not other movies--they are being provided on this thread.

 I am very impressed at the Catholic videos that have appeared recently, and perhaps it reflects an important  revival in Catholic life or culture.

First of all I can’t see it on Ignatius’ website.

Secondly, Australia is in a different DVD region (and video format for that matter) from the US - hence US discs (and sometimes videos) won’t be of any use here. As I said earlier, the series on Teresa of Avila is NOT available, and believe you me I’ve been looking - in the correct format for the Australian region.

Actually you should now have no problem playing NTSC on Australian DVD players, TVs and the like. Most australian DVD players can take NTSC disks and convert them to PAL(if you do not have an NTSC TV), or play them in NTSC(for compatible TVs).

The Region coding has nothing to do with the Video Format, which can now be played on most TVs and DVDs. It is the Region coding you will have a problem with. The Region coding is a codeing that identifies the region that the dvd is to be played in. Players in our region are set to R4.

You can contact Ignatius press, via e-mail if you like, and ask for a region 4 version, even if it’s in NTSC it will still be able to work with your TV and DVD player, you just need to either:
  • change the settings(on both), usually under “Video Format” from PAL to NTSC or AUTO.
  • If you do not have an NTSC compatible TV, you can usually select on your DVD player(especially if it’s a Sony like mine) “Play NTSC on a PAL TV”. This works better for me because my TV’s NTSC mode isn’t terribly good.
  • and the third option is to play it on your computer of cause.

You can’t simply ask for just any movie you want and get a region 4 version, any more than you can ask for literally any car you want and get a left-hand-drive version. There are makers both of DVDs and cars, who simply do not cater for us, as we are such a small market. The lower the level of interest (as with this Teresa of Avila DVD) the less likely it is that it will be available in Region 4.

By the way my DVD, video player and TV have no such settings that I can ascertain. Probably because they’re either old or extremely basic models. And I don’t have a DVD drive, or software for playing DVDs, on my computers. They too are old and extremely basic models.

As I’ve said, I’ve asked about this already, so please don’t insult my intelligence by assuming I don’t know what I’m talking about.

Sorry, I was not attempting to insult you,

Actually it is interesting to note that in our country and New Zealand, Region Coding is now considered to be Illegal by the ACCC(this has resulted in most new DVD players coming “Region Free” or with freely given instructions, by the manufacturer, on how to make DVD players so). This is for the reasons you just stated yourself actually.
 
I have found that it can be difficult to do a search on the Ignatius Press website; however you can get to this movie on the Ignatius Press website by simply typing in “Teresa” in the search box, and this is the 8th item that comes up. When I look for their movies myself, I click on the advanced search choice and then use the categories selection to go to videos first, then type in the search.

I see it now! Purely by koinkydink, my cheap-n-cheerful DVD player seems to have broken down yesterday so I need a new one anyway 🤷
 
I just watched Monsieur Vincent and I thought it was a remarkably powerful film. Incredibly shot and the acting is superlative.
 
3 that I can think of:
Molokai: The Story of Father Damien
The Song of Bernadette
Saint Francis (the one with Dolores Hart)

One that I do not recommend at all is the movie about St. Therese. The movie had alot of promise, but the acting was beyond terrible, it completely detracted from the story.

Do you mean The Relusctant Saint: The Story of St. Joseph of Cupertino (1962) starring Maximilian Schell and Ricardo Montalban? If so, I second the recommendation. This movie is rather funny.

A Man for All Seasons - This is the all time best movie on a saint.

Ocean of Mercy - I’ll have to look that one up never heard of it.
