Recommend Video Games!

Heya guys and gals!
I’m looking for a new game to try (for my PC- I have Steam and an X-box controller for it). I’m thinking of taking a break from my normal go-to MMO, Lord of the Rings Online. I played Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic I and II a few months back and loved them.
Do you guys know any games with great stories like KotOR I/II that don’t have morally objectionable content or gratuitous violence?

A game which I highly recommend is Factorio.

It isn’t really the same genre as games which you named; it’s focused on base resource management and factory design. The developers are responsive to the community’s (name removed by moderator)ut, and have created a game which, though it is still in pre-release on Steam, already feels like a polished product.

I’ve found it quite absorbing. 🙂
 
Everything Borderlands. Borderlands 2 and the DLC are masterpieces. (Complete the main story, and then do Tiny Tina’s Dungeon - I literally wept) The Pre-Sequel was great too. And Tales from the Borderlands is excellent and even more narrative focused. (There’s lots of shooting and such, but I don’t think it’s any worse than KOTOR)

You probably already did Portal and Portal 2. Good stuff.

I think the Balder’s Gate remakes went to steam.

Neverwinter Nights (2002) is still one of my all time favorite games. You can get the platinum pack with all the expansions for like, 10 bucks at GoG.
 
If you don’t mind 8- or 16-bit graphics and you enjoy a good story with RPG dynamics and elements, then the following are (a) excellent, and (b) absolutely free. However, you may have some compatibility issues if you are running them in Windows 10.

The Way - Dark, epic (6 full-length episodes), and rewards multiple replays. Finding out what’s going on is part of the fun, so no blurb from me. 8-bit violence and dark themes, no sexual content except some one-liners.

Love and War: Act I - A much more fun and “family-friendly”, though challenging, game. Its main flaw is ending on a cliffhanger. Future episodes are likely to get more serious, from what the creator’s told me. Some romance content (the protagonists are teenagers, after all), but nothing objectionable.

A Very Long Rope to the Top of the Sky - A massive (60 hours of gameplay) RPG with a very detailed backstory, memorable characters and all kinds of plot twists. Can get infuriatingly challenging at times, but you’ll keep playing just to see what happens next. No compatibility issues. Like The Way, a one-man project and a labour of love. Mature themes (poverty, class struggle, isolation, religious fundamentalism, nihilism), but nothing objectionable as far as I can recall.
 
If you like good RPGs, why not try Mount and Blade: Warband or Skyrim? Both are very good RPGs, and they both have really good modding support! 😃

Well, these are some WWII games that I like to play, where imagination and intense historical accuracy drives the story for me.
 
All you 'gamers" out there…I used to think playing these games was a waste of time and worried about my son who seemed to spend every free moment playing games as he grew up. BUT, he is just fine, still gaming and also has a wonderful family, great job etc. My point is to say a man of similar age and background who became a doctor recently saved my husbands life through DaVinci Robotic surgery. If he had not ‘played all those video games’, he would not have had the skill to save my husbands life. Gary’s surgery was done by robotic arms, while this doctor 'played games" in the corner of the room. He never touched my husband directly, but used the machine to direct the robotic arms, magnifying my husbands organs up to 100Xs, removing a cancerous prostate though tiny channels and tubes, etc. Keep on gaming, there are tons of practical uses.😃
 
If you like KOTOR, I’d recommend the Baldur’s Gate games as well. Planescape: Torment, too. If you don’t care about story and more about dungeon crawling and monster killing, I can also recommend the Icewind Dale games.
 
I’m a Guild Wars guy. 1 or 2. 1’s better if you like talking to other people. 2’s better if you just like running around and doing stuff without much need for social.
 
I recommend World in Conflict: Soviet Assault. It is an alternate history game that features the Soviet Union attacking NATO in 1989. They even invade the US mainland. Here is the trailer:youtube.com/watch?v=0TN68sp-vIw
 
I suggest Batman: Arkham Asylum, Batman: Arkham City, and Batman: Arkham Origins.

The games are story-driven and have some excellent storylines. They involve, unarmed combat against large numbers of enemies, stealth sequences where you incapacitate smaller numbers of armed foes, and puzzles both complex and simple.

The content is of a similar intensity to Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy.
 
If he liked KOTOR, I was going to recommend the first two Fallouts, as well as Wasteland 2 but didn’t know if I should - all have some “objectionable” content and high levels of violence.

Fallout 4 does pick up, later, when it starts getting into the factions. It’s still got a lot of flaws, but I found it to be better than Fallout 3 over all… But not as good as New Vegas.
 
I would recommend the Bioshock games, especially Bioshock Infinite. Fascinating atmosphere and storytelling for first person shooters. Infinite is a bit violent but not overly gory like a horror movie or anything.
 
Origins was somewhat underwhelming in terms of the overall story, but it had good mechanics and the fight with Deathstroke was very well done.
