Recommendation needed: John Paul II writing

To my surprise, my friend who is dyed in the wool Protestant, asked me to give him something that John Paul II has written to read. We have had many discussions over the last year or so.

The door is finally open and I really want to make an impact. Can anyone make a recommendation on what should I give him to read?

Are you referring to one of his books, or perhaps an encyclical or apostolic letter?

If you want to go with an encyclical, I would suggest either *Humanae Vitae *or Veritatis Splendor.

If he’s looking for John Paul II, I wouldn’t recommend Humanae Vitae as that was authored by Pope Paul VI.

What about Pope John Paul II’s book of poetry…stick an encyclical in there with it!

Hey, small note, Humanae Vitae was written by Pope Paul VI not Pope John Paul II. I might go with “Love and Responsibility” or “Crossing the Threshold of Hope”. Hope that helps and God Bless.

Yea, Crossing the Threshold of Hope is a good one, because it’s really simple, for Protestants that would be good.

Theology of the Body for Beginners is by Christopher West, but it is an explanation of JP II’s Wed. audiences where TOB comes from.
TOB is an answer to the sexual revolution and an elaboration on Humanae Vitae. I think this will be a wonderful part of JP IIs legacy.

I will third the recommendation for “Crossing the threshold of Hope”

I think the sections on ecumenism. “Is only Rome right” and “In search of lost unity” would make for good reading for your friend

the Gospel of Life, Evangelium Vita (Humanae Vitae is another excellent papal letter by Paul VI).
Crossing the Threshold of Hope
my brother claims if he has nothing but his bible, breviary and the writings of this last pope he is set for eternity with spiritual reading.
