Recommendations for books on catholic history, papacy, etc

Hello to all
I am looking for recommendations for approved books or those deemed legitimate in the catholic faith that will better inform me of the history of the church, the previous popes, etc.

I am interested in any suggestions that will flesh out the historic figures and controversies as a complement to my prayers, devotions and bible study. In a sense the entertainment and enlightment of the history of Catholicism

I apologize in advance as I tried using the search engine but yielded hundreds of threads the most recent of which were about the Mormon faith and I am using an I phone so editing this is difficult

Witness of Hope - By George Weigel about Pope JPII

Eusebius - The Church History by Paul L. Maier

Also, for anyone, is there a preferred catholic bookseller board readers prefer for books not sold by catholic answers? One that ships to New York and accepts online queries?

Hi, John! Are you near a major Catholic university? If so, their library should be a goldmine for you. I am thinking in particular of Ludwig Pastor’s History of the Popes. It is many, many volumes and quite in depth. If you are able to read and comprehend books on the internet, I know there are many volumes of Mr. Pastor’s work that have been posted. Maybe by now, all of the volumes are accessible on the internet.

Hope this helps a little.
 
A book that helped me get a feel for the history of the Church was "Triumph"by HW Crocker. It’s is good for getting an overview of what has happened. It’s just one volume and probably in your local library and if not at your local Catholic bookstore.

😃 I forgot about that book. I read it last year and enjoyed it very much. The author has a great sense of humor.
