Recommendations Required - Some Specific Topics

Hi all!

As you can see I am new to this forum, however have been reading through it for quite some time now (though I apologise if this has been covered). I should mention that I have had experience reading quite academic literature (as part of a Political Science and Film & TV Studies Major), but not so much philosophy. I have taken one philosophy course, though this was in the early days of uni so I don’t remember too much at all 😛 . I am interested in philosophy, though do not have any real desire to pursue it academically, rather more-so for personal interest.

I was hoping to receive some recommendations (books, articles, whatever!) on the following - a philosophical approach to love both between humans and the love between humans and God, in which I have looked into Jean-Luc Marion’s “The Erotic Phenomenon” (the content is not suggestible as the title is), however I have also read he can be quite dense.

I am also interested in a philosophical approach to the natural world (nature, animals, etc.), and the role it plays in human life and its place in the context of faith.

Finally, I was hoping for some recommendations on writings (of which I am sure there are many) on the relationship between the individual and God, and how this shape’s the individual’s existence (I believe Kierkegaard wrote extensively on this subject, and while not all of his writing is in harmony with the Church, I am under the impression that his writing on this topic specifically is quite sound).

  • St. Augustine (I believe the great Saint wrote about love, though I am not sure in which specific publication of his it can be found)
