I am searching for books about the Philokalia. I have been advised by a reliable person that one needs to read some beginner books that out line and explain the predominant themes of the Philokalia first before getting in the text itself. Any recommendations. Cme across these ones on Amazon but not sure if they are good:

The Philokalia: A Classic Text of Orthodox Spirituality by Brock Bingaman and Bradley Nassif

Philokalia: The Bible of Orthodox Spirituality by Father Anthony Coniaris

The Way of a Pilgrim and The Pilgrim Continues His Way by Helen Bacovcin and Walter J. Ciszek

The Art of Prayer: An Orthodox Anthology by Igumen Chariton

Any recommendationswould be greatly appreciated.

Of the books you mentioned above I would STRONGLY recommend “The Art of Prayer” and “Philokalia: The Bible of Orthodox Spirituality,” but especially “The Art of Prayer.”

There is also an excellent video series available from Orientale Lumen Television that was done by Met. Kallistos (Ware) of Diokleia. The series is called “Mystical Theology of the Eastern Church” and is available at oltv.tv/id1002.html. This series (available in DVD or CD format) is probably the best introduction to the Philokalia in English. 👍 It’s pricey, but it’s worth every penny.

How could I be so remiss? I forgot to mention a wonderful little book that was recommended by St. Ignatius Brianchaninov in his book “On the Prayer of Jesus.” In recommending introductions to the Philokalia he specifically mentions the writings of St. Basil of Poiana Marului, a Romanian monk and spiritual father to St. Paisy Velichkovsky. The writings of St. Basil were meant specifically as introductions to the Philokalia.

There is a wonderful translation of the known writings of Elder Basil available from St. John of Krondstadt Press. Go to the following link: sjkp.org/search.php. The book is rather short and easy to read, but chock full of spiritual gems and insights. 👍

My experience has been that you read the Way of the Pilgrim WHILE reading the Philokalia itself. It’s not rocket science. Have a spiritual director or priest help you as you go along. You don’t need all that complicated stuff.
