Hello,

Yesterday I attended my first Latin Mass. It was quite a beautiful service and a spiritually moving experience. Of course, I had the usual “what’s going on?” feelings for most of it. What is the best text to use for following along in the Mass?

Thank-you for your (name removed by moderator)uts!

I have both the Angelus and Baronius and I like them both. I actually prefer the Angelus because the font is easier to read for me and the book is easier to handle. The Baronius is quite think and harder for me to hold on to with arthritis.

Like I said…both are quality…in my book…pun intended;)

That angelus press missal is ginormous, I saw one and it has everything you’d need and then some.

I have three Missals that I’ve acquired over the past year:

The New Marian Missal put out by the sedevacantist CMRI (I didn’t know it was printed by CMRI until after I bought it 😦 )

The Angelus Press Missal
The Baronius Press Missal

New Marian doesn’t have everything interlinear, so it’s not as easy to follow parts that you are supposed to hear in a sung mass (some propers are only in English and some are interlinear). It’s also an older version that talks of the perfidious Jews in the intercessions for Good Friday.

The Angelus and Baronius Press Missals are both good. I’ve noticed that I the translations are slightly different as evidenced by the Communicantes (“In communion with” in Angelus instead of “Communicating with” per the Baronius (and New Marian)). Frankly, I prefer the rendering “In communion with” but that’s neither here nor there. Since I just got the Baronius (today!) I have to spend some time with it and see which I prefer.

If you’re just starting, I actually don’t recommend any of the “big” missals. I’d go with the booklet missal already mentioned, or you can print one off the internet. They’ll be infinitely easier to follow as you won’t be flipping back and forth all the time. I like this one because it has obvious notes about when to stand and kneel, but the rest of this site is pretty hard-core Traditional, which I don’t necessarily endorse.

Here’s another one:

The second site also has a nice calendar that will show which day it is, which is handy as the calendar is different from the NO.

If you decide you want to get a Big Missal, I’d echo the recommendations for the Angelus. i also like the Lasance (if you can find one) or the St Andrew’s, in that order. I don’t have the Baronius, so can’t comment, but it’s probably fine.

Were you at the Cathedral in Raleigh? I was there, and it was my first Latin Mass as well. It was a very beautiful Mass, and I will definitely be going every month when it’s offered.

I bought the Ecclesia Dei booklet and read it before going to Mass. It helped tremendously. I highly recommend it.

I was able to follow along pretty well and only got lost a couple of times.
