I would like to take a philosophy class or two around my work schedule. Being that my major in college was an engineering discipline, I didn’t have the opportunity to study philosophy.

I’m specifically looking for particular recommendations of professors who don’t dissent from Catholic teaching or ‘muddy the waters’ of one’s intellect with skewed teaching. Sadly, one needs to be aware of these sorts of influences even on many Catholic campuses.

Thus the reason for my post. Prof. Robert P. George of Princeton is great, however he is a little too far, as is Prof. Peter Kreeft. And Alice Von Hildebrand is retired, otherwise she would be the closest (Hunter College).

Any recommendations?

Sure. Brian Davies is quite good (Fordham), especially on St Thomas Aqunas. Merold Westphal is there too and is also pretty good, though I’ve only read a little by him. Don’t think Westphal is Catholic but he seems fairly conservative anyway.

Other than that, NYU pretty much dominates the philosophy scene (besides Princeton).
