I would like to know more about the Mass: the reasons and symbolism behind the why and when of all we say, pray, and do during Mass. I would like a book (or other resource) that explains, “We do ‘this’ at this time in the Mass because Jesus did ‘this’ at this point in his ministry.” Recommendations please!

I guess I should’ve posted this over in the Liturgy and Sacraments forum? Should I copy and paste it over there or would a moderator mind moving it to it’s proper place? Sorry and thanks.

How to Book of the Mass from Our Sunday Visitor.
Celebrating the Mass by Fr. McBride, also from OSV
A Walk through the Mass, video with Bp. Wuerl, from most Catholic book/video catalogs.
for the scriptural basis for every word and action of the Mass–see the CAtholic Church and the Bible by Fr. Peter Stravinskas from Ignatius press

Wellspring of Worship by Corbon is good.
Looking at the Liturgy by Aidan Nichols is also good.
Spirit of the Liturgy by Ratzinger (Benedict XVI) and also Spirit of the Liturgy by Guardini is also full of insights.

The great tome written about the liturgy is called “The Theological Dimensions of the Liturgy” by Vagaggini is also available. However, I would only recommend that book to someone that has advanced education in theology.

Ceremonies of the Modern Roman Rite, The Eucharist and the Liturgy of the Hours.

This book is a manual for clergy and all involved in liturgical ministries. By Peter J. Elliott, Ignatius. It is a very good read, simple and covers every topic.

The Archdiocese of Detroit has a couple of vidoes online that might help you out.
Go here and look for “Introduction to the Mass” and “Understanding the Mass”.

First start with the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Read the whole part devoted to the Liturgy all the way through, and then go back and re-read it again, just more closely. Study it often. Learn some of it by heart, and I don’t mean just memorize stuff, but really take everything that you read in. And try to apply what you learn to your life, so that you have a greater understanding of the Most Holy Sacrifice of the Mass when you go to Mass.
