Hi all. This evening I had a thougt that I am not truly sorry for my sins. I did my examination of conscience, but now I am so scared. I want to go to Reconciliation tomorrow, but maybe now I won’t. My scrupulosity does make me have a fear of Hell. I didn’t worry about this before, but now I am. I would appreciate any help or advice.

Thanks all.

If you know they are wrong and that you should confess them, then that’s enough. You can also ask the priest in the confessional and make sure you mention that you are scrupulous. If you know that, it would also be a good idea to have one priest you go to for guidance on this issue and to follow his advice to the letter.

Confessing with merely attrition is sufficient to be absolved, so don’t worry. 🙂

If you don’t already, find a regular confessor to whom you can ask questions and receive guidance regarding your scruples. This is extremely helpful.

Remember too, as I do, that today is also the feast day of St. Alphonsus Liguori, who himself struggled with scrupulous thoughts later in life, and was still a great saint.

One of the great things he did was to encourage priests who hear confessions to do so with mercy, even from those of us with imperfect contrition.

So trust in God, follow your good inclinations, and make the best confession you can! I will do the same.

Speaking of Saint Alphonsus Liguori, that reminds me of the Scrupulous Anonymous service from Liguori Publications. You can check it out here: mission.liguori.org/newsletters/scrupanon.htm

I’ve heard that it is really good!

Also, this is not your scrupulosity trying to tempt you from abandoning Reconciliation, it is unfortunately the devil. I cannot find it now, but I remember reading a quote from Saint John Bosco that that is the tactic of the devil - it tempts you to sin, and then just when you have the courage to go to Confession, it tries to get you to stop.

May God bless you abundantly and help you to remember His Infinite Mercies! 🙂
