Hey everyone. I was wondering how you prefer your confession with a priest. Face to face or behind a screen? When you post, please try to explain why you like confession this way.

I greatly prefer confession behind a screen. The anonymity makes it easier to confess. It makes it easier for me to realize that the priest represents Christ.

It says I can’t vote for some reason.

The priest usually knows who I am anyway, but I prefer behind the screen. I’m just used to it.

Face to face. At my parish, my priest usually doesn’t sit in the reconcilliation room during scheduled times, so I have to ask him for reconcilliation. I figured there was no point in going behind the screen since he already knew it was me.

God Bless!

If you’re a new member you can’t vote immediately…but keep posting and you’ll vote with the rest of us!

Welcome! 🙂

I go face to face because I prefer to speak openly, and it doesn’t bother me what the priests think. It just doesn’t bother me that they know the reality of me as I am who I am good and bad.

I really like face to face because that’s all I’ve known. I’ve only been Catholic for 10 years and in the same Parish.

The only thing I don’t think is appropriate and therefore I do NOT like is “communal penance” unless it is followed by individual penance.

I prefer behind the screen because, as someone else said, it helps me to realise that the priest represents Christ. Also, if I am face to face, our parish priest tends to talk a lot…:o
I feel better after confession behind a screen. I’m not sure why. I just do:shrug:

It doesn’t matter to me. Either way is fine. I find that the face to face is usually a shorter line, so this is the way I go most often. Occasionally, I hit the priest up before mass, and there have been times that we go into the sacristy for a face to face confession. When I go in my own parish, I prefer face to face with my pastor. He has a talent for helping me realize that maybe my examination of conscience wasn’t as thorough as it should have been. I think he knows me better than I know myself. lol.

I prefer receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation face to face with my priest. I find it easier to confess my sins when I see the face of another human person, as fallible as I am, who genuinely longs for me to be reconciled with my God. To recognize the grace of God working through another human person in order to heal me and draw me closer to God is a humbling experience and makes my repentence seem so much deeper. It takes greater courage for me to confess to a priest face to face and so the lifting of the burden of sin seems so much more tangible to me. That’s just me, of course, and I also take advantage of the Sacrament behind a screen from time to time, but given the choice, I usually go face to face.

I always go face to face. For some reason I find it less intimidating.

I said ‘doesn’t matter’ because I haven’t been behind a screen for decades. I don’t particularly care for face to face, but like a previous poster said, if I have to approach the priest to ask for confession it hardly makes sense to then insist on using the curtain/screen.

I must admit that I hate to go to confession now because the priest is my boss. Seal of Confession or not, it’s not a comfortable situation and I really wish I lived in a bigger town or had a different job.

Must admit that for at least a decade we had general absolution and it has been a steep learning curve to return to individual confession.

I can’t remember the last time I went behind a screen.

For some reason, I would rather not talk through a screen or wall. I think I depend on the non-verbal parts of communication as much as the verbal. Growing up, I can also remember my dad having a “thing” about people from yelling from room to room in the house. It was important to be in the same room as the person you’re talking to. Maybe it’s a holdover from that.

We always go to confession with our pastor, and if my kids go in before or after me, he’d know it was me anyway.

I really don’t have personal preference. When I first began going to confession, I preferred going behind the screen, but as I became more comfortable with the sacrament I became comfortable with face to face confessions.

Presently, I take what I can get depending on the Priests’ time. Sometimes the parish is really busy and they don’t have time to make it to the confessional before Mass so they will advise parishoners to come down to their office for confession, which is of course face to face. Anyway, it wouldn’t matter for me because I can’t hide from the priest…LOL. I am one of the few Westerners in the parish and they always know my voice so even if they didn’t see my face they would know it’s me 😃 , but whether they know it’s me or not doesn’t particularly trouble me. I am just happy to recieve the sacrament and continue trying to work out my salvation 🙂 .

I enjoy going to confession face to face. I like it because I know my priest very well - and we usually have my confession flow more like conversations. It is also just more comforting for me to do it face to face

Screen. I’m there to wash my soul, not make a new buddy.

When I need some counseling or longer (name removed by moderator)ut, I’ll make an appointment with Father.

Confession is a businesslike activity. Unless he’s some amazing confessor, the whole process (not including penance) shouldn’t take more than a couple minutes.

I voted face to face. I’m confessing to Christ through the priest, and being absolved by Christ through the priest. I just feel like I wouldn’t sit behind a screen to talk to Christ, so I don’t do it with my priest either.

I have only done Ronciliation face to face. Although I think behind a screen would take the nervousness out of it. I sometimes feel a little awkward face to face

behind the screen. It’s what I grew up with, it’s what I’m used too. Although I’ve done face to face on occasion and have no problem with it, I just as soon keep that screen and that distance between me and priest. It’s Christ afterall that is hearing my confession, he (priest) doesnt’ have to see me or know who I am.

Confession isn’t a businesslike activity, it is an encounter with Christ and with His Church. It is personal and intimate. Sorry you have not come across many amazing confessors. My confessions usually take over 15 minutes sometimes much longer, and that is without mortal sins…but I do have an very amazing confessor.
